Hiney Lineys!

I have found another new cloth diapering system that I want to share with you. Do you like covers and pre-folds but want the stay-dry option that pockets provide you? Then you’ll love Hiney Lineys!

The Hiney Lineys system is a 3 part system (sometimes referred to as an all-in-three or AI3) consisting of the Versa cover, snap in Liney, and an insert. Let’s talk about each piece individually:

Versa Cover: Available in one-size, newborn, or toddler/big kig sizes the cover is very similar to most diaper covers on the market. It is available in both hook & loop and in a side snapping option. The one-size diaper offers a 2 step rise adjusting snap. The one-size diaper is rated at 12-35lbs and I think that’s very accurate to how it will fit (my tot is 25-ish pounds and it fits nicely with some extra room to grow). The cover is made of water-proof PUL (outside) and wipe-able nylon (inside). This cover can be used alone as you would use any diaper cover or can be used with the Liney system.

Snap-In Liney: What is a Liney?? It’s a snap-in polyester stay-dry suedecloth layer that fits into the Versa cover. It’s an optional piece but when paired with the Versa cover will provide a nice layer of fabric between your baby and the insert that will keep his/her bum super dry and soft. It’s similar to a layer of suedecloth that is present in your favorite pocket diaper but snaps in so you can reuse the cover at changing time (assuming that the cover is not soiled). Ideally you would have more Lineys in your stash than you would covers. As an extra bonus the Liney is available in a nice tan color so you’ll never see those pesky stains again (you know those tiny stains that you just can’t get out – we all have them). How does the Liney snap in to the cover? There are two snaps in the front and two snaps in the back and they simply snap into the cover. It’s very simple to do – even for dads and daycares.

Inserts: Hiney Lineys has 2 different snap in inserts. They each snap on to the Liney in the front and lay behind the Liney. The insert that I have is made of Indian Cotton – 18 layers total in 3 pads that are sewn together at the end. Being sewn together like this aides in the drying time. If you use the system with a cover, a Liney and a snap in insert you can have all of the pieces attached and ready to go just like any pocket diapering system so it’s just as easy for dads and daycare’s as it is for you.

It’s “Versa”-tile! One of the common things that I notice after parents start using cloth diapers is that they become very particular about their inserts. Some parents love pre-folds and flats because they are so cost effective and flexible. Other parents prefer hemp for their heavy wetters. Still many parents use a combination of inserts to find that perfect absorbency for their child. The Hiney Lineys Versa system offers you this flexibility. You don’t have to use the Lineys or the inserts and you aren’t forced to buy the complete system – you decide how to use it. Many parents love pre-folds and flats but would like to add a stay dry layer to keep their babies rash free and dry. The Hiney Lineys system does just that. It truly is a “Versa”-tile system.

Want one more reason to love the Hiney Lineys system?? They are made in Maine – right here in the USA! It’s a family owned and operated business and the owner Sheila is a fabulous lady.

(Note: I have a very active toddler who is protesting photos these days. Once I capture her in her Hiney Lineys I’ll be sure to share it with you here.)

Where to buy? Hiney Lineys are now available at Kelly’s Closet.

Want to win a complete Hiney Lineys Versa System? Follow the directions in the Rafflecopter application below to enter to win. I’ll be selecting a winner in a few weeks.

Giveaway Alert! Read to the bottom to win your own Tushie Ties cloth diaper!

Have you heard of Tushie Ties yet? They aren’t new but they are a small mom owned and operated company that is local to my area (Tampa Bay, FL). I had the honor of meeting Crystal (the owner) in the spring at the Great Cloth Diaper Change Tampa Bay. In fact, we’re already planning to work together on the 2012 GCDC and have some big surprises in store for our local friends.

I had coffee a few months back with Crystal and she offered me one of her diapers to test out. If you know me I love new diapers but I usually stick with pockets and simple diapers. The Tushie Tie diaper is similar to a prefold but instead of using a pin or snappi you tie it on with a piece of ribbon that is sewn on the diaper. The ribbon is sewn on the front and there are two small reinforced holes at the top. You lay the diaper down like a prefold (angel fold style) and simple lace the ribbon through the holes and tie it on. It’s actually quite simple and it looks adorable once it’s on. There is no PUL on the diaper so you will need a cover with these.

The standard (or original) Tushie Ties are made from a Bamboo Velour that is super soft next to the babies skin and so absorbent. Since they are similar to a prefold you can fold them any way you like. Here is a quick video shared from Crystal about how to use the Tushie Ties.

If you can’t see the video here is the link: http://youtu.be/A46Vne3i7Zo

Since we’ve been potty training we’ve only used our Tushie Ties at night and I’ve been super impressed with how well they kept her dry. We did receive an extra bamboo velour doubler (sold separately) that we use at nights and it certainly helps for those toddler nights. Like I said earlier – I’m not a huge prefold girl so I don’t have much experience folding and fitting them. It took me a few practice rounds with Lil’ B to feel comfortable with the fit. I always ended up with droopy legs that didn’t fit well inside the cover but after talking with Crystal (and a few more practice rounds) I’ve finally mastered the prefold and the Tushie Tie. If you’ve used prefolds in any capacity you’ll have no problem at all with the Tushie Tie from day one!

The original Tushie Tie comes in a wide variety of ribbon patterns and colors and since it’s a small company I’m pretty sure you could talk Crystal into customizing your ribbon to match just about anything. In addition to the regular Tushie Ties, Crystal also makes an economy line called the Simplicity. It’s the same exact diaper but in a cotton fleece lycra (90% cotton) instead of bamboo. The original sells for $15 each and the Simplicity for $7.99 each!! Not bad for natural fibers if you ask me. You can also purchase the doublers in a 3 pack for only $12. I’ve actually used the doubler in just about every nighttime diaper we have – including our new FuzziBunz Trickle Free Trainer!!

Here are some vintage iPhone pics that I was able to capture before bedtime one night. They are soft focused on purpose to try and disguise the messy bedroom! LOL!

What type of learner are you? Do you learn things best by reading them? Or are you an auditory or visual learner? I actually learn best by watching videos and seeing pictures (or touching the real product). That is one reason that cloth diapering can be so intimidating to many parents. While some brick and mortar stores exist most of us learn about cloth diapering online and shop online. It’s very challenging to learn about the different diapers and how to actually use them until you get them in your hands. Nevermind all the crazy terminology and techniques that come along with it.

Enter The Willow Store and Catherine Bolden. Her and her family decided that they would create an instructional video, Diapering Today, that would help parents understand cloth diapering from a real parents perspective. They used local cloth diapering parents (young and old) to share their personal experiences as if they were sitting in the room with you. You almost get the feel that by the end of the video these families are your friends. I especially love the little old couple who talk about the history of diapering and how things have changed over the years.

Mixed in with their personal stories and testimonies are short tutorials on the terms, techniques for using cloth diapers, accessories, and more.

The video is easy to navigate and is broken down into small chapters based on the different topics:

Why choose cloth diapers?

How to use cloth diapers

Types of cloth diapers

Getting started

Tips and Tricks

Washing

Accessories

Potty Training

Cloth on a budget

Terms

Evolution of diapers

Resources

and so much more!

Each chapter is only about 10-15 minutes in length so you can watch them at your leisure without losing your spot. This would be a great resource to share with a friend or expectant mom (or dad) to show them just how easy cloth diapering can be. Catherine (and myself for that matter) believes that education is key! The more informed parents are of their choices the better decisions they can make for themselves and their families.

How can you use this video?

As a baby shower gift

To share with friends, family, and other caregivers about how and why you cloth diaper

For a doula, birthing center, pediatrician, OBGYN, etc

As a cloth diapering class or by a retailer who is fortunate enough to have a brick & mortar store

There are a million more ways to use the video. How many can you think of?

Want to win a copy of the video? Want to win a gift certificate or cloth diapers? Join us Tuesday, November 29th at 9pm ET for a Diapering Today Twitter Party with The Willow Store! Our special guest sponsors for the evening are Kelly Wels, itti bitti, and Diaper Shops who have all donated additional prizes for you! We hope to see you there.

For information about the prizes and how to enter: http://ecochicparties.theecochic.com/2011/11/diapering-today-holiday-twitter-party/

Guess what else? You’ll catch a glimpse of me, The Eco Chic, in the video several times! I feel so stupid watching myself on video and wish I had a Hollywood hair and makeup artist to help me out! But then I guess it wouldn’t be ‘real life’ would it?!

Disclosure: A copy of the video was received free of charge for my work on this project. The Twitter Party is a sponsored campaign. I would promote the video and the sponsors regardless!

Have you heard of Oh Katy cloth diapers yet?

We received ours a few months ago shortly after I met the owner Katie at the spring ABC Kids Expo. Katie had a very modern and hit booth at the ABC expo and her personality was adorable. She was very personable and the one word that keeps coming to mind is “cute” – she just had that trendy, sweet, and cute feel about her.

The Oh Katy diaper is a one-sized (8-35lbs) pocket diaper that is very similar to what you may already be familiar with (as compared to other pocket style diapers). It does have some unique characteristics that stand out to me.

Front opening pocket – only a few brands are moving the pocket to the front. Depends on the day if I like it or not – where does your little one’s poop end up? Front or back?

Micro-fleece lining - very common actually but I prefer it to the suede cloth linings.

Newborn hip snaps – prevents wing droop! A must have if you have a small newborn or skinny toddler.

TPU – it’s a heat bonding process for PUL that is safer for the environment than traditional PUL bonding with chemicals. This is a similar process that Rump-a-rooz uses for their diapers.

9 fashionable colors

Earth friendly packaging which can be easily recycled with your cardboard recycling program.

While we’ve only used our Oh Katy a handful of times (thanks to our never-ending potty training that still isn’t finished) but we’ve been very happy with the fit and the quality of this diaper. The current stock of the Oh Katy line is limited until next month (Sept 2011) – I wonder if Katie will be releasing anything new at the ABC Kids Expo?! We’ll just have to wait and see!

Almost two years into our cloth diapering journey and I still haven’t written aboutFuzziBunz until now. We received one last spring, one at BlogHer in August (thanks Gina @ Feminist Breeder) and now our Fuzzi stash is up to three. The FuzziBunz system is a great one-sized pocket diaper that uses the interior elastic to adjust the rise and waist to fit your baby perfectly. This makes for a very smooth and trim look without tons of snaps cluttering up the front of the diaper.

The regular FuzziBunz comes with two microfiber inserts while the Hemp comes with one hemp insert (actually it’s 55% hemp and 45% organic cotton). There are advantages to choose the newest hemp variety. Hemp is more absorbent than microfiber, more environmentally friendly, and has a natural anitmicrobial property. Hemp is also trimmer making your fluffy bum a little less fluffier for those concerned about the thickness of your babies rump! Guess what else – if you look closely on the tag of the insert you’ll see that the FuzziBunz insert is actually made by BabyKicks – one of my favorite hemp inserts EVER!

Both varieties come standard with a fleece lining of the pocket giving an ultra soft feel next to your babies bunz. One thing that sets FuzziBunz ahead of most of the competitors is the replacement elastic that comes standard with each and every diaper. Replacement elastics will come in handy if you plan on using your stash on more than one child. Elastic is the first part of a diaper to go bad – and usually the most daunting to replace. However with the simple FuzziBunz system it only takes minutes to replace the elastic.

Where do FuzziBunz rank in our stash? They are among the top 5that I will reach for on a regular basis. I especially love the new hemp variety for the extra absorbency at night time. I usually pair it with a microfiber and have instant super soaking capabilities! The regular FuzziBunz one-size is available in 15 bright new colors and if you’re lucky you can even find some old colors still available at select retailers (like my friends at www.DiapersEtc.com). The hemp FuzziBunz is currently only available in the neutral vanilla color. Looking for a hook & loop FuzziBunz – check out Kellys Closet who is the exclusive retailer for the hook & loop.

Beyond the diaper- FuzziBunz stands out among the cloth diaper manufacturers for their community involvement. Thereson, the owner and creator of FuzziBunz, organized the Cloth for the Coast during the Gulf Coast Oil Disaster where parents could donate their retired cloth diapers to help in the clean up efforts in the Gulf. In addition, FuzziBunz supports local and international cloth diapering projects to donate cloth diapers to babies in need. Babies in the US, Uganda, and Haiti have been blessed with some FuzziBunz love. You can read more about the charitable efforts of FuzziBunz in their Press Release section of their site.

Buy it: FuzziBunz can be found at most cloth diapering retailers including some of my favorites Kelly’s Closet and Diapers Etc. The hemp version is the most expensive at $21.95.

Win it: One lucky reader will win a hemp FuzziBunz of their very own. Simply visit FuzziBunz online and tell me one thing you learned about FuzziBunz. Leave me a comment below and you are automatically entered into this giveaway.

CONGRATS KAREN with winning comment #549!

Optional entries: Leave a comment for each extra entry completed with a daily maximum of 5 extra entries. Be sure to leave links, email addresses, etc as applicable in your comments to document your efforts.

Giveaway alert! Be sure to read the details at the bottom of this post on how you could be one of THREE lucky winners from Sweet Pea Diapers. *Open to residents of the US, Canada, and Australia!

CONGRATS TO #215, 57, and 84 – Kristin, Angela, and Susan – please check your emails for information on how to claim your Sweet Pea Diapers!

Did you attend the Eco Chic Parties a few weeks ago? We met Nancy of Sweet Pea Diapers and the entire fluffy stash. I have been honored to try the one-size with microfiber inserts, the one-size with hemp and microfiber inserts, and the adorable Sweet Pea one-size cover. They have been added to our regular fluffy rotation and are here to stay! In addition to these items Sweet Pea also makes an All-in-three system and a wet bag.

The Sweet Pea is a modern cloth diapering system with a few interesting features. (Blue and White pictured above)

The one-size is a traditional pocket diaper with snap closures and snap rise adjusters.

The pocket has openings in both the front and back (similar to the Thirsties Duo system).

This double opening helps with stuffing making it easier to stuff the inserts.

It also makes washing and unstuffing easier – especially with those poopy diapers that can now be removed from the front keeping your hands clean!

The hemp/microfiber insert combination increases the absorbency making it perfect for naps and nights.

One of my favorite features – a hanging tab is sewn into the back of each diaper (inside by tag) to use when you hang your diapers to dry.

The Sweet Pea one-size cover (Yellow pictured above) is a heavy duty cover with snap closure. It has the same unique hanging tab in the back but it also has an awesome double leg gusset to keep the messes contained. I don’t have a ton of covers but I really like the quality of the Sweet Pea cover. If I were to use a pre-fold every day I would want to use this cover.

Size of the one-size Sweet Peas fit babies 8-35lbs which is the average for most pocket style diapers. At 23 months we’re still on the middle rise snap with plenty of room to grow.

Buy it: The Sweet Pea one-size cover retails for $10.95, the one-size pocket with microfiber insert retails for $15.95, and the one-size pocket with hemp/microfiber insert retails for $18.95. There is a Sweet Pea for every budget!

Win it: Sweet Pea is giving away the following: 1) one Sweet Pea one-size with 2 microfiber inserts, 2) one Sweet Pea one-size with 1 microfiber and 1 hemp insert, and 3) one Sweet Pea one-size diaper cover. There will be three different winners and I will randomly select which diaper the winners will receive.

Mandatory entry: Visit Sweet Pea Diapers and tell me which color and diaper you would select if you were the winner! Leave your comment below and be sure to enter a valid email address.

Optional entries: Leave a comment for each extra entry completed with a daily maximum of 5 extra entries. Be sure to leave links, email addresses, etc as applicable in your comments to document your efforts.

The Sprout Change system is a one-size diaper cover that is reversible. The sweet pea color combination I received to review is a sweet pale pink and pale green. It comes with a hemp insert that is super absorbent and allows for a trim fitting diaper. Depending on which side (color) is on the outside you can snap the diaper in side snap fashion or front snap fashion. There are no rise or waist snap adjustments which helps keep the diaper trim. Instead it has an inner elastic with easy to adjust buttons that allow you to fit the diaper to your babies exact size. The Sprout Change system fits most babies from 8lbs to 40lbs. I personally love that there are no pockets to stuff and no snaps to adjust – a very easy and simple system!

Every year our family gathers together to take some photos that we’ll use on our Christmas cards. I’m usually a last minute person and don’t get them done until long after Thanksgiving has past. This year I was provided an opportunity to use tinyprints to order our Christmas cards as part of a blog partnership. I’ve seen their ad in magazines and drooled over their stylish cards for years but like I said I usually run out of time. With a little incentive from tinyprints I dressed my kids up in their Sunday best and after church one Sunday we stayed on the grounds and took some photos.

I like to pretend that I have some photography skills and I usually end up with a few photos that look really nice. Out of about 50 pictures I found a few that I loved and decided to play around with PhotoShop. I’m still learning that too. Finally I sat down one evening and started looking through the thousands (yes, really – over 2,000 designs) of card styles that tinyprints offers. I didn’t have any restrictions placed upon me so I simply searched until I found the perfect card for our family. It was no easy decision either. You can make your cards using one photo or a collage of photos – the possibilities were practically endless. It was very easy to navigate and narrow down your selection based on price (starting as low as .69 ea), number of photos, or colors.

Once I found the card style that I liked it was time to play with the photos. I’m sure if you are good with your photo editing and have plenty of time to spare you could do just about anything with your photos and cards. With just about an hour left before my eyes slammed shut I imported pictures, cropped, played with colors, etc. Once I was happy with my selection I woke up the hubby to get his thoughts on my hard work – thankfully he approved!

I was even able to have the envelopes pre-printed with our return address. If I had more time and had been even more prepared I could have had the addresses to all my recipients pre-printed. After reviewing my proof I pushed ORDER and away they went to the printers! The processing time was very quick and I had a proof to review within 24 hrs. Within the first 48 hrs my cards were proofed, printed, and shipped – arriving just a few short days later. I even think thattinyprints would have worked in years past with my normal procrastination.

Once the package arrived I was excited to see just how perfect our Christmas cards were going to be for the year. I’m very pleased with the results and I’m sure this year our family and friends will be keeping our cards in their photo albums instead of the trash.

Are they eco-friendly? Unfortunately tinyprints doesn’t have any advertised eco-friendly options for paper or ink. Even their shipping seemed to be a bit wasteful – the box they arrived in was oversized for the cards – however the cards were an unusual dimension. Our families Christmas cards never have been printed eco-friendly though. We treat them as we would our family photos and hope that our friends and family will treasure them for years to come. After all it’s usually the only time some of our friends and family get to see our growing family and that’s worth the environmental impact to me.
