Weekend Getaways Florida – Ichetucknee Springs

The past few weekends we've ventured out of comfort zone (pool, beach, shopping at Target, etc) and visited parts of Florida that we wouldn't normally visit.  We've gone outside and enjoyed the natural beauty that surrounds us and haven't had to go very far.  I'm hoping this new trend will continue and we'll see more natural Florida with the kids. Last weekends trip was to Ichetucknee Springs (don't ask me to say it because I butcher it and sound like a redneck!) in Fort White, FL near the Florida/Georgia border.  From the State Parks website: The crystalline Ichetucknee River flows six miles through shaded hammocks and wetlands before it joins the Santa Fe River. The pictures show just how crystalline the water is but it doesn't show you how cold it is!  Year round 73F - which for Florida water is down right FREEZING!  You loose your breath when you jump in but you feel so alive! Great Cloth Diaper Change – Tampa/St. Pete, FL – 2011

What an amazing day!  Here are just a few of the pics that I took today as a witness to the event. I especially love the ladies who showed up wearing GCDC t-shirts.  The front said "I can change my babies cloth diaper in 30 seconds! Can you?" and the back said something about the GCDC.  Their babies each had t-shirts with their names on them and the GCDC on the back. It was great to meet (or at least see) some of the faces I've seen on Facebook.  It was great to make some local connections in the baby and cloth diapering community.  I'm excited to finally be going local with my advocacy!!! You Are What You Eat

This post is going to be hard for me to write because it's one area in my life where I'm still learning - eating green.  What does it mean to eat GREEN?  Does it mean eating locally?  Does it mean to eat organic?  Does it mean that I have to be a vegetarian?  Do I have to shop at a natural food store?  Do I have to eat raw food?  Do I have to eat only fresh food? Eating green is actually all of those things - and you may incorporate some or all of the aspects of eating green - I don't believe that there is a right or wrong way to eat green.  My history- I come from a family who likes food, a lot!  I can remember many family reunions with everyone huddled in the kitchen cooking for hours, making more food then we could eat in a week.  My fraternal grandmother was a tiny frail lady who knew how to cook - she didn't have a choice with 5 hungry kids and a husband.  My favorite family memories as a child involve turkey, ham, mashed potatoes, Yorkshire pudding, gravy, gravy, gravy, and ... Cloth Diapers & Accessories – The Diaper Sprayer

To Spray or Not To Spray - That is the Question! For 15 months we chose not to use a diaper sprayer out of pure frugality - I didn't see the need to spend any money when our 'system' for dealing with poop was still working.  Then one fine day a Knickernappies Diaper Sprayer (thanks Diapers, Etc) showed up in my mailbox and I HAD to give it a try.  I immediately assumed my gender neutral position and decided that I could install this simple piece of plumbing equipment, right?  Neither hubs or I are incredibly handy but the diaper sprayer came with all of the pieces and simple, easy to follow instructions to install.  I stepped into the bathroom and conducted a test - I turned off the water supply from behind the toilet and flushed to see if the tank emptied as the directions said it would.  Then I flushed again, and again - HOUSTON WE HAVE A PROBLEM!  We've feared for months now that we may have had a slight leak in the toilet (house was built in the 80's and the bathrooms are ... Grocery Store Observation

I just returned from a trip to the local grocery store.  I just had to pick up a few things and I made an observation while selecting my cherry tomatoes.  Normally, I look at the organic veggies first to compare the price.  If they are close I choose the organic.  However, when I looked at the organic tomatoes I noticed they came from Mexico.  When I got to the non-organic tomatoes...guess what?  They were local!!!  To me I would prefer to buy locally and luckily living in Florida the grocery stores stock the local fruits and veggies when they are in season.  Not only could I have gotten fresh Florida strawberries but also the tomatoes!  The grocery stores are getting smart; they advertise heavily on the local fruits and veggies now.  So...EcoChic lesson of the day...read the labels, you never know what you might learn.  ...
