Hiney Lineys!

I have found another new cloth diapering system that I want to share with you.  Do you like covers and pre-folds but want the stay-dry option that pockets provide you?  Then you’ll love Hiney Lineys!

The Hiney Lineys system is a 3 part system (sometimes referred to as an all-in-three or AI3) consisting of the Versa cover, snap in Liney, and an insert.  Let’s talk about each piece individually:

Versa Cover:  Available in one-size, newborn, or toddler/big kig sizes the cover is very similar to most diaper covers on the market.  It is available in both hook & loop and in a side snapping option.  The one-size diaper offers a 2 step rise adjusting snap.  The one-size diaper is rated at 12-35lbs and I think that’s very accurate to how it will fit (my tot is 25-ish pounds and it fits nicely with some extra room to grow).  The cover is made of water-proof PUL (outside) and wipe-able nylon (inside).  This cover can be used alone as you would use any diaper cover or can be used with the Liney system.

Snap-In Liney:  What is a Liney??  It’s a snap-in polyester stay-dry suedecloth layer that fits into the Versa cover.  It’s an optional piece but when paired with the Versa cover will provide a nice layer of fabric between your baby and the insert that will keep his/her bum super dry and soft.  It’s similar to a layer of suedecloth that is present in your favorite pocket diaper but snaps in so you can reuse the cover at changing time (assuming that the cover is not soiled).  Ideally you would have more Lineys in your stash than you would covers.  As an extra bonus the Liney is available in a nice tan color so you’ll never see those pesky stains again (you know those tiny stains that you just can’t get out – we all have them).  How does the Liney snap in to the cover?  There are two snaps in the front and two snaps in the back and they simply snap into the cover.  It’s very simple to do – even for dads and daycares.

Inserts:  Hiney Lineys has 2 different snap in inserts.  They each snap on to the Liney in the front and lay behind the Liney.  The insert that I have is made of Indian Cotton – 18 layers total in 3 pads that are sewn together at the end.  Being sewn together like this aides in the drying time.  If you use the system with a cover, a Liney and a snap in insert you can have all of the pieces attached and ready to go just like any pocket diapering system so it’s just as easy for dads and daycare’s as it is for you.

It’s “Versa”-tile!  One of the common things that I notice after parents start using cloth diapers is that they become very particular about their inserts.  Some parents love pre-folds and flats because they are so cost effective and flexible.  Other parents prefer hemp for their heavy wetters.  Still many parents use a combination of inserts to find that perfect absorbency for their child.  The Hiney Lineys Versa system offers you this flexibility.  You don’t have to use the Lineys or the inserts and you aren’t forced to buy the complete system – you decide how to use it.  Many parents love pre-folds and flats but would like to add a stay dry layer to keep their babies rash free and dry.  The Hiney Lineys system does just that.  It truly is a “Versa”-tile system.

Let’s talk about teeth today!  What do you and your kids use to brush your teeth?  One of those ‘popular’ kids brands of toothpaste in those fancy princess or character wrappings?  Have you ever wondered what makes those toothpastes so tasty that your kids choose to eat it instead of brushing their teeth?  I just looked at the back of my tube of Crest Kids and it doesn’t list the ingredients (aside from the active ingredient) on the actual tube (it probably did on the box) but here is the link to the Environmental Working Groups list of ingredients for this product.

Do you see anything that that would be of concern to you?  Maybe the Xanthan Gum, Flavor, and perhaps the FD&C Blue coloring.  Why do we need to give them these artificial sweeteners and colorants to brush their teeth?  Defeats the purpose of brushing their teeth if you ask me…

We did a Silly Strawberry Swap this past week in our house! We switched out our regular kids toothpaste with Tom’s of Maine Silly Strawberry toothpaste.  I’ve used a small sample of Tom’s for myself but haven’t made the official swap in our house…but it’s on my list…now if only I can convince the hubs to try it!  I like the regular Tom’s so I was certain my kids would like the Silly Strawberry.  I left both tubes in the drawer because I wanted to get their true reactions and see which one they reached for in the morning/nights.

Results?? My daughter LOVES the Silly Strawberry!  She’s only 2 (almost 3) so it’s not hard to convince her to try something as long as it looks, smells, and tastes fun.  She picked the Tom’s every day this week and even said, “I want the Silly stuff mommy!”  My son on the other hand tried Tom’s one day and went back to his Crest the rest of the week.  At 8 yrs old he told me he didn’t like the taste of the Tom’s and that his breath felt cleaner with his regular toothpaste.  So what did I do??  I tried it myself!

I have to tell you I like the regular Tom’s (adult variety) myself because you still get that minty fresh taste in your mouth that makes your breath feel fresh.  After using the Silly Strawberry I didn’t get that minty or fresh feel.  It didn’t leave that ‘clean’ feel in my mouth.  Maybe I should stick with the adult Tom’s for my son since he’s concerned about his breath these days (you know…all those girls he talks to each day…hehe).

Have you heard of Tushie Ties yet? They aren’t new but they are a small mom owned and operated company that is local to my area (Tampa Bay, FL).  I had the honor of meeting Crystal (the owner) in the spring at the Great Cloth Diaper Change Tampa Bay.  In fact, we’re already planning to work together on the 2012 GCDC and have some big surprises in store for our local friends.

I had coffee a few months back with Crystal and she offered me one of her diapers to test out.  If you know me I love new diapers but I usually stick with pockets and simple diapers.  The Tushie Tie diaper is similar to a prefold but instead of using a pin or snappi you tie it on with a piece of ribbon that is sewn on the diaper.  The ribbon is sewn on the front and there are two small reinforced holes at the top.  You lay the diaper down like a prefold (angel fold style) and simple lace the ribbon through the holes and tie it on.  It’s actually quite simple and it looks adorable once it’s on.  There is no PUL on the diaper so you will need a cover with these.

The standard (or original) Tushie Ties are made from a Bamboo Velour that is super soft next to the babies skin and so absorbent.  Since they are similar to a prefold you can fold them any way you like. Here is a quick video shared from Crystal about how to use the Tushie Ties.

Since we’ve been potty training we’ve only used our Tushie Ties at night and I’ve been super impressed with how well they kept her dry.  We did receive an extra bamboo velour doubler (sold separately) that we use at nights and it certainly helps for those toddler nights.  Like I said earlier – I’m not a huge prefold girl so I don’t have much experience folding and fitting them.  It took me a few practice rounds with Lil’ B to feel comfortable with the fit.  I always ended up with droopy legs that didn’t fit well inside the cover but after talking with Crystal (and a few more practice rounds) I’ve finally mastered the prefold and the Tushie Tie.  If you’ve used prefolds in any capacity you’ll have no problem at all with the Tushie Tie from day one!

The original Tushie Tie comes in a wide variety of ribbon patterns and colors and since it’s a small company I’m pretty sure you could talk Crystal into customizing your ribbon to match just about anything.  In addition to the regular Tushie Ties, Crystal also makes an economy line called the Simplicity.  It’s the same exact diaper but in a cotton fleece lycra (90% cotton) instead of bamboo.  The original sells for $15 each and the Simplicity for $7.99 each!!  Not bad for natural fibers if you ask me.  You can also purchase the doublers in a 3 pack for only $12.  I’ve actually used the doubler in just about every nighttime diaper we have – including our new FuzziBunz Trickle Free Trainer!!

I love it when new cloth diaper products are released! The fluffy buzz gets in the air and I get all excited to see what’s next.  This week Tiny Tush revealed their new limited edition Tiny Tush Elite 1.1 Prints.  They released a limited edition Star Spangled print just before July 4th which was absolutely adorable.  To add to that collection there are 4 more prints – Bubbles, Camo, Bella, and Bots!

I’ve actually never reviewed the Tiny Tush collection so it was certainly a welcomed surprise to my stash.  We received the Bubbles print with it’s gorgeous green background with purple, pink, blue, and white dots.

The Elite is available in both snaps or Aplix – we of course prefer our snaps!  The Bubble snaps are in a coordinating pink color.

I love how the bubbles overlap one another creating a rainbow of colors.

And because my tot decided to poop in her brand new Elite 5 minutes after she put it on this is the best picture I have to share with you today!  The poop was well contained and plopped off nicely into the toilet once she told me she pooped (yes we’re STILL working on potty training – don’t ask!).  It washed up quite nicely too and thankfully she didn’t stain her brand new diaper.

The Tiny Tush Elite is a pocket style diaper that comes with 2 microfiber inserts.  The pocket opens in the back which I actually prefer.  The front of the diaper is adjustable with a single row of hip snaps with cross-over tabs (great to fit your tiny baby too).  There are three rows of rise adjusting snaps that makes this similar to other one-sized pocket diaper.  The retail price is $19.95 and is available at an authorized Tiny Tush retailer.

I’ve always been a big fan of the BabyKicks line of cloth diapers.  I tried their Bumboo diaper over a year ago and it’s still a regular in our rotation.  Since then I’ve also added the updated 3g diaper in Chocoholic Pink Love (a Kelly’s Closet exclusive color).  The 3g took the already wonderful Bumboo and made it even better.

The 3g has a slightly wider waist and a longer one-size hemp insert.  In addition they added some fabulous new colors to the collection last year including Azure, Meadow, and Poppy.  Late last week BabyKicks released their newest color….a nameless orange 3g.

Nameless?  Orange? I’ve tried the entire product line (except for the all-in-one) and I’m in absolute love with the ultra soft minkee fabric.  Minkee fabric is so soft that it reminds me of a stuffed animal.  My daughter loves to ‘pet’ her diaper and always comments on how soft it is when I put it on her.  You would think that a fabric this soft would require a cover but that’s not the case – the bitti boo is the only diaper in the brand that requires a cover.

I’m not usually a sized diaper fan because I have a hard time picking the perfect size diaper for our growing tot; however I actually liked the way the bitti d’lish fit better than the bitti tutto one-sized.  Both the tutto and the d’lish fit nice and had some great features.  The tutto comes with the patented poo-fence which is a great inner gusset that keeps the poo on the inside of the diaper.  Both the tutto and the d’lish come with snap in bamboo or microfiber soaker pads that allow you to customize the absorbency to meet your child’s needs.

“Hey Boo Boo!” Yogi and Boo Boo were regular guests in our house on Saturday mornings when I was growing up.  I was excited to see Warner Bros. release the Yogi Bear movie to theaters last year but with our crazy life we never made it to see it on the big screen. The Sierra Club will be adding their tips to help Save the Bears to the widget below.
