A week ago I joined a Revolution – A Cloth Diaper Revolution!  Have you joined yet?

I know that not all of my readers use cloth diapers.  Many of you visit here because you are researching cloth diapers.  Some of you just delete my cloth diaper posts and read some of my other natural parenting posts.  Some of you may be friends or family who think my cloth diaper obsession is a little crazy.  I know that not everyone I come in contact with will decide to use cloth diapers and I accept that.  I try not to force my obsession on others but I will continue to try to show you how easy it can be.

Example – this weekend we headed back to the Little League field for opening day.  One of my friends from the park has a one year old and I had introduced her to cloth diapers when she was born.  Like most new parents I talk to about cloth diapers with she politely explained that she didn’t think cloth was for her.  One year later (this past weekend) when she went to change her babies disposable diaper I explained one more time how I could save her hundreds of dollars a year by switching to cloth.  I even told her that my stash was so large that she could borrow a few to give them a test drive.  She looked at me with deep respect and just rolled her eyes.  Again she said that she just didn’t have the time to add cloth to their routine.

I also have several new mommies at church who I’ve shown our cloth diapers to – explained how easy it is – how much money they would save – how they could save the planet!  Again, they each politely explain that it’s just not their thing.

What if each of these families made a commitment to use just 3 cloth diapers a day instead of disposable diapers for one year?

If 100,000 families decided to change just 3 cloth diapers a day for one year here are the results:

1. 30-50 million pounds of solid waste would be diverted from the landfill.
2. 100 million disposable diapers NOT be purchased.
3. $24 million dollars would be saved in just one year combined by each of those families.
4. Finally we would increase the awareness of the environmental, health, and monetary benefits of cloth diapering.

If you are currently spending $10-20 for a pack of disposable diapers every few days here is my challenge for you.  Spend $50 now and you will end up saving $260 (on average) in the coming year.  It doesn’t look so scary when you look at it that way.

Here is how you could incorporate just 3 cloth diapers into your daily routine:

Day 1 -
9:00 AM: Change baby into a cloth diaper.
12:00 (Noon): Change baby into a cloth diaper.
3:00 PM: Change baby into a cloth diaper.
6:00 PM: Toss the 3 dirty cloth diapers into the laundry (small load).  Wash according to manufacturer directions which should look similar to this:  1) Wash on cold/cold with 1/4 amount of recommended detergent. 2) Wash on hot/cold with 1/4 amount of detergent. 3) Run an extra cold water rinse. <TOTAL TIME: 45 minutes approx>
8:00 PM: Toss the diaper inserts into the drier and hang the covers out to dry.
8:05 PM: Pour yourself a glass of wine with the money you’ve saved from today and relax knowing that you’ve made one THREE small changes in just one day!

Day 2 – REPEAT!

Day 3 – REPEAT!

With summer fast approaching – and your dream beach vacation already booked – what do you need to pack for your wee ones to make the beach fun and relaxing?  Being a Florida girl (at least for the last 5 years) I’ve found some important things you don’t want to forget on your next trip.  

If you aren’t lucky enough to be staying ON the beach your bag might be a little more like mine – our beach is about 10 minutes away.  For those of you who are staying ON the beach you may need to modify the list slightly.  

Me Top Beach Accessories: 

-Beach chairs, blanket, and towels.  I’m more of a blanket/towel girl while my husband likes to lounge in his beach chair.  We found some great beach chairs at Target that are very functional – especially when you are toting a tot!  Our chairs have a backpack strap on them and a pocket for storing you towel, shoes, or wallet.  This type of chair costs a little more but it’s worth the investment so you can throw it on your back and go.  

-Family Beach Cabana Tent.  With a new baby last summer I had to find a way to keep her protected from the sun and sand so we could enjoy our day at the beach.  One Step Ahead sells the Smarties Cabana Tent and I was hesitant to invest in it.  The reviews were ok – but not great – and at $79 it’s not a small investment.  The main problem with the reviews was folding the tent back into the cute little bag it comes in.  I found a video online that shows you how to fold the tent and I would recommend watching AND practicing before you head out to the beach.  Once you get the hang of folding it back it’s a piece of cake.  Why do I recommend the tent to my friends?  1) If you are breastfeeding the tent provides fold down sides for privacy.  2) The tent comes complete with a backpack carrying case and is lightweight.  3) The tent is a great place for babies (and big kids…or mommies) to play or nap in the shade.  Roll the sides up and the breeze can blow through the tent or down for a little more privacy.  We never go to the beach without our tent! 

-Sunscreen.  While I haven’t researched all the available sunscreens on the market, I do know that The Safe Mama has.  If you are concerned with Parabens and other toxic chemicals that are in your beauty products be sure to check out her Safe Sunscreen List.  We currently use a mix of questionable products that I’m sure aren’t on the list – but baby gets Earth’s Best which is paraben free.  It’s a little thick and hard to rub in but it will certainly keep her from getting burned.  Whichever brand you use –please don’t forget the sunscreen!  You will turn into a baked lobster in under an hour! 

-Sunglasses and hats.   Protect your eyes from UV rays – and your babies’ eyes too.  They make baby sunglasses and hats that will keep them safe from the damaging rays. 

-Snacks.  Pack a small bag or cooler with snacks and drinks for yourself and the kids.  There is nothing worse than having to leave the beach because you’re hungry.  Eco-tip: Bring a reusable bottle filled with ice and water.  

-Trash bag.  I try to always throw in a grocery bag (yes – we still have a few) to take with us.  We always find trash littered on the beach and it’s a nice lesson to teach your kids.  Typical items we ALWAYS find are straws, cigarette butts, and bottle caps.  Most public beaches have trash cans placed as you exit the beach so just toss it in the can before you leave.  

-Cloth Diapers & Wet Bags!   Yes – we take our cloth diapers with us to the beach!  While they do sell special swim diapers (in cloth and disposable) a standard cloth diaper used without the liner works just as well (if not better).  And don’t forget the wet bag to toss your wet diapers and swim wear into before you leave.  

Now – if only there was a perfect accessory to keep all the sand out of my car!  It feels like we take the entire beach home with us by the looks of my backseat.

Environmental justice - the inequitable environmental burdens borne by groups such as racial minorities, women, residents of economically disadvantagedareas, or residents of developing nations. (Reference – Wikipedia)

With our oldest, like most first time parents, we learned as we went along.  We were young and inexperienced parents.  We didn’t make a ton of money.  We thought we were doing the best we could with our limited resources.  I knew I could offer my son the very best when I decided to breastfeed him.  I knew that when he was older that I could offer him the very best by making his own baby food from fresh veggies.  BUT…I couldn’t offer him the best of everything. 

I didn’t think we could afford organic foods.  The organic market wasn’t nearly as evolved as it is today (6 yrs ago).  While I knew that organic was better I couldn’t justify spending the extra money and at the same time I didn’t really think it was that much better.  After all, both my husband and I turned out just fine without it. 

Today when I picked up Lil’ B from her new caregiver one of the other parents was there at the same time.  She came bearing gifts specifically for the caregiver but essentially it was for my baby and another baby she watches.  She is apparently on the WIC program and had a ton of food that her baby didn’t eat.  She had over 10 boxes of baby cereal and over 30 jars of baby food.  As she explained, all of this was part of the WIC program so she took it from the store each week thinking that her baby would sometime need all of it.  I’m sure she is a new mom and had no idea how long a box of baby cereal lasts.  They both offered some of the food to me if I wanted it.  I turned it down!

WTF?  I turned down FREE food?  Why would I do this?  It wasn’t organic cereal or organic jar food.  I politely told her that it’s not the kind of cereal that Lil’ B eats and thanked her for the offer.  Looking back I feel bad.  But not because I turned down the offer but because everyone in this country cannot offer their baby the very best.  For some people they cannot afford to pay the extra money (we couldn’t afford it with our first child), for some people they just don’t know what the difference is.  There are people in this world, in this very town that can’t even afford the cheap no-name baby cereal…and here I am turning it down because it’s not ‘good enough!’  

Question?  Why is the government giving parents cheap food?  Why is the government offering formula free to parents?  And why do these same parents end up with more food than they know what to do with?  Is the government telling parents with lower incomes that their children aren’t ‘good enough’ for the very best for their babies?  Why wouldn’t the government promote breastfeeding to low income families so that their babies could have the benefits of the perfect baby food?  The same question could be asked in defense of cloth diapers.  Wouldn’t low income families benefit from using cloth diapers because of the lifetime cost alone? 

Now before you start defending yourself I should tell you that these are just thoughts that I had based off this one encounter.  Our family does not qualify, nor have we ever qualified, for WIC or any other government program.  Therefore I really don’t know what they offer to parents.  I’m sure that the intentions of the program are to provide food to low income families so that they at least have the ability to eat healthy.  I actually just looked up the WIC food program and what they offer.  The first thing I noticed was the entire section on breastfeeding promotion! 

So am I just speaking in circles?  If WIC really is offering parents healthy options (breastfeeding, whole wheat bread, and vegetables are all on the WIC list) why aren’t all parents taking advantage of these programs to provide the very best for their babies?  Is it lack of education about the other options?  Do they just not realize that fresh vegetables are better than jarred baby food?  Do they not realize that organic cereals are better for their babies?  Is it lack of education on the government? 

And what about BPA, lead, parabens, and other toxins that are found in baby bottles, bowls, forks, spoons, sippy cups, lotions, body washes, etc.  The toxin loaded options are much cheaper therefore lower income families are the target customer. 

Is this all a form of environmental justice?  Is it ok for us to give an environmentally inferior product to a low income family?  Your thoughts?  I’d love to hear them…good, bad, or ugly!

As a new MOMMY who DOODLES in her spare time I hope to one day DESIGN a wonderful legacy to leave my children.  This MOMMY wears many different NECKLACES each day as I breastfeed my newest little angel (Lil’ B), work my full time job, blog about the environment, and look for great HOMEMADE BABY FOOD RECIPES.  Each and every day I try to make an effort to Reduce, Reuse, and RePEaT my actions from the day before.  It’s not always easy since my life was not HAND PICKED by me but rather by my PUMPKINS that I love so much.  Some days I wish I could escape to ERBA and drink some wonderful ORGANIC wine grown from the TERRA.  Instead I am asked by Big B to CYCLE around the block in the 92 degree heat of Florida.  My friends have called me an ECO-freak, but I prefer the LABEL of Eco Chic.  During the school year you will find me FUNDRAISING for the local PTA or T-ball team.  I rarely have time to pick up the PAPER or enjoy the high CULTURE that I once enjoyed by visiting museums.  I dream of the day my husband will take me to the Greek Isles to see the wonderful DITTANY flower of Crete along with my BABY and little boy.  I try to remember my SOFT sweater when I travel for work, it makes the LANDING much smoother on my head which is propped against the window taking advantage of a few minutes to myself.  I quickly return to reality when my LADYBUG dirty’s her cloth DIAPERS that I’ve been using for a few months now.  In my spare time I am trying to find time to get the PIGGYs soaked and coated with a fresh color of PAINT.  It is my PURE desire to DESIGN a world where my KIDS THINK GREEN and take pride in this wonderful GREEN PLANET that we live on.  The hubby and I will continue to hold our pool PARTIES, cookout with friends, and TRAVEL around the world.  Maybe one day we’ll even take a train from the DEPOT or watch the STELLA BLU in the night sky.
