Ringling Bros. Circus XTREME Tampa

The Circus... Acrobatics... Clowns... Human Cannonball... BMX... Contortionists... Tightrope Walkers... Elephants... Tigers... Popcorn... Cotton Candy... Smiles... Laughs... That pretty much sums up our day at the Circus! The performers were XTREME and put on a fabulous show for us today in Tampa.  This was the first time in at least 25 years that I've seen a Ringling Bros. Circus and it was pretty close to what I remembered as a child.  The acrobatics were stunning.  The clowns were silly.  The ariel performances were amazing.  The energy from the performers was over the top! As I watched the circus through the eyes of my own children I'm reminded that sometimes we just need to laugh and be silly.  I'm hoping that 2015 is full of laughter and fun with my family.  Today was a good start to laughing more.   We'd like to thank Ringling Bros. and the Amalie Arena for inviting us to be part of the circus today. ... Best of 2014 on The Eco Chic

It's hard to believe that another year has almost ended and we're about to welcome 2015 in just a few more days! It's been a great year personally.  My blog continues to thrive and has me looking forward to some changes in the coming year. I find myself blogging more and more about life, family, traveling, and hobbies rather than eco-friendly living.  I hope you'll stay with me and share our families journey through life and I promise to still bring you some green living related posts. It's interesting to look back at the stats for the blog and see which posts were read most.  Many of my older content (from 2010-current) still brings in many of you; but I wanted to share with you my top 10 posts from 2014!  I left off the giveaway posts since those aren't really worth re-reading. My top post of 2014 is one I'm quite proud of.  As I continue to educate and share tips on cloth diapering (even though we haven't cloth diapered in several years), I felt it was important to share with you ... #ringlingbros Tampa

I have many fond memories as a child taking the trip into the city to see the Circus with my family. It was a big deal for us as a kid to see the show, eat popcorn and cotton candy, and to talk my parents into some over-priced souvenir.  We only went 2-3 times as a kid but I remember how big everything was under the big tent! Fast-forward to my life as a parent and neither of my kids have ever seen a circus.  My oldest is 11 and we've talked about it several times but just never made it to a show.  My youngest will be turning six in January and the circus just happens to fall over her birthday weekend!  What better time to take the kids to their first circus. Thank you Feld Entertainment & Amalie Arena for providing complimentary passes for the show so we can make these memories with our children. Interesting facts about the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus: Did you know that the first Ringling Bros. Circus was back in 1907?  James Bailey and P.T. Barnum ... [ Read More ]

Coding with Kids – Hour of Code

My kids go to possibly the coolest school EVER!  They attend a charter school (we're in Florida) and have the ability to learn Greek language, music, art, and even computer science.  While they do still teach the basics and follow common core, they have a lot of freedom in the classrooms. My daughter is in Kindergarten and has been learning Greek since she was 3 yrs old (they also have a pre-K program). On Friday, I got our daily email from her teacher and she shared a very cool website that they worked on; Code.org.  There is an ongoing movement to show the importance of teaching code to students of any age.  With so much technology in our lives, our children have the ability to do so much if they are taught the skills early.  Today is the final day of "The Hour of Code" week, which encourages you to spend an hour with your kids teaching them the basics of coding. Breathe....you don't have to know ANYTHING about coding to help!!  You may even learn a little ... [ Read More ]

Cool Kids Gift Ideas

Cool Kids Gifts

Affiliate links present in this post.  My kids are on different extremes when it comes to Christmas gifts this year.  My daughter is 5 (almost 6) and wants EVERYTHING she sees on TV or in the sales flyers. I seriously think if they came out with a LaLaLoopsy lump of coal she'd want it.  My son is 11 and a little more difficult to shop for this year.  There really isn't much that he's asked for.  Here are just a few gift ideas for kids of all ages... Lottie & Friends Lottie is a relatively new set of dolls for children ages 3-9.  Unlike traditional "Barbie" style dolls, Lottie is an actual child herself.  She doesn't have boobs, doesn't wear make-up, no high healed shoes! She's just a kid.  Lottie has some fun outfits that you can change and pets you can get.  My daughter has been playing with Lottie for a few weeks now and really likes it. She looks at Lottie like a friend, tells her secrets, and tries to sneak her to school in her backpack.  I happened to be ... [ Read More ]

Techie Gift Gear Ideas

Techie Gift Gear

If you are anything like me, this is the week you scramble trying to find just the right gift for everyone on your list. I do most of my shopping online so this is THE week to get stuff ordered so it will arrive in time.  Here are just a few of my favorite techie finds this year that may or may not be found under the tree on Christmas morning. Powerslayer by Velvetwire: Can you ever have too many iPhone chargers laying around? In a house full of techies we're always fighting over the cords and you can never find them all when you need them.  With my old iPhone 5, I would constantly need to charge it because the battery was shot.  With the Powerslayer you eliminate wasted power because it automatically turns itself off once your device is fully charged.  Once my phone reached about 90-95% the Powerslayer would shut off; you could tell when the LED indicator on the front shut off.  The Powerslayer comes with a very long braided USB cable and a felt and leather travel case. I loved ... [ Read More ]

How to Bake the PERFECT Christmas Cookie

Christmas Cookies

I'm FINALLY in the Christmas spirit and in the mood to bake a few batches of our favorite cookies.  We don't bake much the rest of the year, but I always find time to bake cookies with the kids in December.  You probably won't stumble upon my recipes pinned on Pinterest or on the pages of a magazine, but I make the PERFECT Christmas Cookies!!  Do you want to know my secret? First, go to the baking aisle of your favorite store and pick up a few packs of morsels that look good to you.  I couldn't find our favorite mint chocolate chips from last year, but I did find some red & green morsels and a pack of toffee chips.  At least that will make up some good chocolate chip cookies, right!? Next, think really hard about what other key ingredients may be missing from your kitchen.  I know I needed eggs and I thought I was out of stick butter so I chunked those in our cart.  I can't possible think of anything else that I'm out of so we head to the checkout. After dinner is over and ... [ Read More ]

Sea World’s Christmas Celebration 2015

Sea World Christmas Celebration

This past weekend we were invited to Sea World's Christmas Celebration to get a glimpse behind the scenes and to learn more about the special Christmas performances going on around the park.  Unlike some of the other area theme parks, Sea World includes their Christmas performances with your regular park admission.  Plus, kids get in FREE through the end of December with a paying adult. Sea World will always hold a special place in my heart and the Christmas spirit just enhances that love of the park and the work they do to help preserve our natural world. I found myself a little teary eyed during some of the performances.  Even if you only go for a few hours, here is my list of 5 things you don't want to miss at Sea World in December. 1. Polar Express - Sea World has once again transformed the polar exhibit into a train ride on the Polar Express that takes you to the North Pole to meet Santa Clause.  The experience is based off the popular Christmas movie, the Polar Express. ... 2015 Cloth Diaper Color Trends According to Pantone

2015 Pantone Color Trends

It was announced on Thursday that the 2015 Pantone Color of the Year is Marsala, 18-1438. Marsala is a naturally robust and earthy red wine color and I suspect it's only a matter of time before you start seeing Marsala (0r a something similar) in the cloth diaper industry. Here's a look some of the other top Pantone colors that are likely to appear on a cloth diaper for 2015. 2015 Cloth Diaper Color Trends According to Pantone Some of the color trends have already started to make their way into some popular cloth diapers recently.  While the colors may not be exact matches, remember that many manufactures will divert from the Pantone scale just slightly so they don't come out with the same exact color as their competitors. Strawberry Ice 16-1721 Strawberry Ice looks really similar to the new Sloomb Strawberry Longies. Classic Blue 19-4052 Classic Blue and bumGenius Stellar (coming soon) have some striking similarities. Glacier Gray 14-4102 Thirsties new Ocean ... [ Read More ]
