Are you looking for a good eco-friendly sunscreen that is safe for your family and kids?

Since we live in Florida we spend a lot of time outdoors, especially during the summer months. We spend the weekends splashing away in the pool or playing in the sand at the beach. It’s important for me to know how to keep myself and my kids protected from the suns damaging rays.

Smart Sun Safety Tips

Limit your sun exposure between the hours of 10am and 4pm (if possible) when the sun is the strongest and most damaging.

Cover up! Even in the heat of the summer the safest way to protect yourself from the sun is to cover up. Wear light colored clothing (reflects the sun light), hats, and sunglasses when you have to be out in the sun. Invest in a few rash guards for your children when they are swimming to keep their sun exposure to a minimum.

Enjoy the shade. We have an amazing pop up style beach tent that we bought when Lil’ B was a baby. I would highly recommend something similar or even a simple beach umbrella if you are spending the day outdoors. Even mommy can escape into the shade to cool down.

Find a safe sunscreen and apply regularly. The Environmental Working Group (EWG) just updated their recommendations for safe sunscreens in their 2012 Sunscreen Guide. Remember that you want a product that scores low (1-2 is best) by EWG. Over the past few weeks we’ve been trying the Beyond Coastal line of sunscreens.

I am always looking for sunscreens that are safe for my kids. I have tried to limit our use of spray or spritz on sunscreens because they are so expensive and you end up spraying most of the sunscreen into the air. At the ridiculous prices I pay for sunscreen I don’t want to waste it by spraying the air. I feel like you get a better cover (and better protection) with lotions. I know they take longer to put on and you get your hands all messy but they really do work better. The next obstacle is finding one that is free of all those nasty chemicals (parabens, oxybenzone, PABA, petroleum, Vitamin A, and artificial fragrances) that won’t pose a potential risk to my children’s health as they get older. Have you ever looked at the ingredients in sunscreens? S-C-A-R-Y!

Beyond Coastal line of sun care products all score between 1-3 on the EWG scale (out of 10) making them one of the safest sunscreens you can find. The line consists of their Active (non-mineral) sunscreen line and their Natural (mineral) sunscreen line. All of their products range from 15-30 SPF and they even have a line specifically formulate for our kids.

The Natural Kids SPF 30 (2 on EWG) is a mineral based sunscreen that contains zinc oxide and titanium dioxide to protect against UVA/UVB rays. It takes a little more effort to rub it in since it’s the white, mineral based sunscreen but it rubbed in better than some of the brands I used last summer. I also loved the Active Face Stick for their noses and little faces. I like the stick for faces because it applies easier and my kids don’t scream if I get close to their eyes (it doesn’t burn). Overall we were very happy with the entire line and I’ve even found myself applying the lip balm before I head out each day.

Would you like to try the Beyond Coastal brand? When you sign up for their newsletter they will email you a 25% off coupon (which I’ll be using myself to stock up on more for the summer) for your next purchase. You can also win a Beyond Coastal prize package here!

To win the prize package you see above you’ll need to leave a comment below answering the following question.

What is your family’s favorite fun in the sun activity?

I will close comments on Monday, May 28th at midnight ET and select a winner at random on Tuesday, May 29th. The winner will be selected at random. Open to U.S. residents over the age of 18.

Disclosure: Samples of the sunscreen line were provided by Beyond Coastal for the review and giveaway. All opinions shared in this post are my own.

Attachment parenting. Extreme parenting. Extended breastfeeding. Babywearing. Cosleeping. Cloth Diapering.

What do you think of when you hear those words or phrases? Do you hear positive words or negative phrases? It all depends on how you parent I suppose. I will tell you both sides of my story.

Child #1 – Parenting Age – 29: When my son was born I still considered myself a fairly young parent even though I know I was older than most of you when you had your first child. I lived in a rural town and didn’t have a lot of friends with children. I knew from the beginning of my pregnancy that I wanted to ‘try’ to breastfeed my son for at least the first few months. I was working full time and had no friends or family who I knew that breastfed. My OBGYNs office didn’t provide me with any guidance on whether to breastfeed or offer my child formula but they did give me free samples of formula. In the hospital I struggled with breastfeeding but the lactation specialist and nurses were very supportive and never once suggested that I offer him formula. I left the hospital with a pump and an appointment with the lactation specialist to follow-up. I came back a few days later and she tried to help but I still left and continued to pump. I resorted to educating myself and with the help of a nursing shield was able to teach my child how to latch within a few weeks. He was healthy and continued to gain weight so the medical professionals stopped worrying about it. I had support of my family but was questioned often about how long I was going to continue to breastfeed and how did I know that he was getting enough. As a first time mom I had to go with my instincts – I knew he was growing and healthy and that I was doing what was best for him so I didn’t worry! I didn’t have any other breastfeeding problems until he was about 10 months when I had my first cracked nipple and my nurse suggested that I stop breastfeeding immediately and have a mammogram. Thankfully I didn’t listen to him, continued to breastfeed, and contacted a La Leche League (LLL) in my area for advice. The crack healed and I continued to breastfeed until he turned one year old. Weaning was hard and painful but at the time it was the right thing for our family.

After that experience I was the go-to-girl for my friends and family when they had their babies. I encouraged friends and family to give it a try and my best piece of advice was for them to listen to their instincts. I never once considered myself an attachment parent, I never wore my son, I didn’t cosleep, and I didn’t know anything about cloth diapers (aside from the fact that my mom used prefolds on me). Breastfeeding to me was the way I chose to feed my son – it was my parenting choice. I do remember thinking at the time that extended breastfeeding beyond the age of 1 was weird.

Child #2 – Parenting Age – 35: Many of you have been following along since my daughter was born and know my breastfeeding story. I breastfed her until her 2nd birthday when we were officially done weaning. I chose to wean because it was an agreement that my husband and I had made about when to stop. I never in a million years would have thought I would have breastfed my baby until she was 2. I wore her in a sling and in an Ergo. We didn’t practice cosleeping but our babies still sleep with us on the weekends or when they are sick. I’m sure that these parenting choices were made due to some of my influences in the cloth diapering community. Many cloth diapering parents also breastfeed (some for 2 yrs, 3 yrs, and some for longer), wear their babies, and cosleep.

What I’ve learned with time is that my perspective has changed. Breastfeeding a child beyond one year old is no longer strange, weird, or even gross. It’s normal and I think that with time it will be more accepted. At this time though the comments about this cover photo are a perfect example of why parents fail at breastfeeding their children.

Mother’s continue to feel like they constantly have to hide behind a nursing apron, hat, or other crazy invention that keeps your baby and your boob out of the view of others. For some reason society thinks that walking around in a barely there bikini is acceptable but breastfeeding a baby (or toddler) is something that we need to hide. Here is a beautiful video that I’m sharing from Annie (PhD in Parenting) compiled last year about breastfeeding and covering up.

Now about the magazine cover! The cover photo shows a 26 year old mom, Jamie Lynne Grumet, breastfeeding her 3 year old son. The title on the cover says “Are You MOM ENOUGH? Why attachment parenting drives some mother’s to extremes…”

Let me dissect for you what I see when I look at the cover -

A 26 year old mom nursing her 3 year old toddler – BEAUTIFUL! I love that she (and the magazine) have decided to show the photo on their cover. Breastfeeding is a beautiful thing and there is nothing wrong with the photo. Breastfeeding in public is an on-going debate between parents and society and what is socially acceptable. Breastfeeding a toddler is more common than most of us think but you’ll probably disagree with me because mothers feel like they must hide from society. Maybe it’s not as accepted here in the U.S. but in other countries the average age is 3 or 4 years old. (Please don’t give me the excuse that developing countries need to breastfeed for longer because they are poor – most of Europe is more accepting and last time I checked there are wealthy people there too!)

Another thing that I see when I look at the photo is a toddler standing – toddlers are very active and when Lil’ B was nursing she would stand, sit, twirl, and do acrobats while she was nursing. Seeing this boy standing up is nothing uncommon to me.

A mom on my Facebook wall commented about the size of the moms breast…

“…somehow I’m even doubting those boobs hold milk, they certainly don’t look like they’ve been nursed on for 3 years straight.”

As a rather small breasted woman myself I can tell you that by the time I weaned my breasts were quite small and didn’t look like they could possible have any milk in them any longer. We were only nursing 1-2 times a day at that point so I’m sure there wasn’t much milk but there was enough.

I do see the photo trying to provide shock-and-awe! TIME wants this to be controversial so that people will read their magazine. I see the title as trying to grab your attention and cause you to be passionate (either positive or negative) about attachment parenting and extended breastfeeding. It wants to start a conversation! It’s done just that, hasn’t it?

Is the title too harsh? Is it drawing yet another line between mothers? Is it trying to get us to say, “I’m right, and you’re wrong?” Perhaps that’s all in the way you read it. I personally think that it works at the shock-and-awe and it works to get you interested enough to want to read the article. If you actually take the time to read the article and supporting articles on their website you’ll see that it’s not trying to slam a parent for their choices. It’s not trying to draw that line between mothers. It’s trying to educate parents and society that the parenting choices (breastfeeding, extended breastfeeding, babywearing, cosleeping, cloth diapering, and attachment parenting) are not only for attachment parents – but for any parent who chooses it. They could have easily have shown an ugly, fat, women who portrays the characteristics of what society calls a hippie breastfeeding a toddler but I doubt that it would have gotten this much attention. The women they show in the rest of the magazine are all mainstream, typical American women – moms – who choose to breastfeed.

Parenting is hard enough without people placing labels on you or judging your decisions. I don’t consider myself an attachment parent. I consider myself a parent who breastfed my baby until she was 2, a parent who sometimes wore my baby (as did daddy), a parent who loves to snuggle with my kids in bed, a parent who uses cloth diapers, and a parent who loves my children and wants the very best for them. I offered them what I consider to be the best for them. What is acceptable by our family may be different than what is acceptable for your family. That does not mean that I am right and it doesn’t mean that you are wrong.

What is so wrong about nurturing your child? Why do we feel the need to stick our noses where they don’t belong? The best thing we can do in society is learn to be more accepting. I want to challenge everyone to smile and keep on walking next time they see a woman breastfeeding their child – regardless of the age. Don’t make them feel uncomfortable, don’t look embarrassed, and please don’t ask them to cover up or go someplace else. If you are a mother who wasn’t successful with breastfeeding, couldn’t breastfeed or just didn’t think it was for you – I want to encourage you to look past the shock-and-awe of the photo and read the article. You may just be surprised to find out that we all have something in common – we love our babies and want what’s best for them.

I want to wish you all an early Happy Mother’s Day and encourage you to leave your comments. Just remember to be polite or respectful.

Lil’ B is now 3 years old (and about 5 months) and we have been potty trained for months now during the day – most of the time.

Yes, we still have the occasional day accident like this past weekend when I was doing laundry. I went to her room to put away clothes and realized there were a pair of panties on the floor. Upon further investigation I realized they were wet (fun). Next up comes the search for ‘the wet spot’ in the house. Here is how the conversation went.

Me: Bai, do you have panties on?

Bai: Yep (lifts skirt to show me)

Me: Did you pee pee?

Bai: Yeah

Me: Where?

Bai: Over here (points to spot in kitchen)

Me: (Observing that it’s mostly dry) Did you clean it up?

Bai: Yeah, with the towel (points to the kitchen towel sitting on the sink that I JUST finished wiping my hands on)

Me: Oh (sarcastically) I see! (GROSS!!! Quickly rewashes hands after I toss the towel in the laundry!)

Aside from those rare moments we’re still wearing diapers at night! This means we still use one cloth diaper every day and I am still washing cloth diapers!

What does our toddler *nighttime* cloth diaper routine look like?

We saved our 10 favorite cloth diapers and packed up the rest.

We’ve added a Super Undies Overnight trainer, Flip trainer, and a few other trainers that we don’t use overnight (sitting in the drawer wasting space).

She doesn’t mind putting on a diaper and actually enjoys picking them out. This weeks favorite has been her ‘soft’ diapers (i.e. itti bitti AIO and SIO d’lish size L).

Applecheeks diapers are easy to pull up and down by a toddler so you don’t have to snap/unsnap.

I got lazy with washing!! I’m only washing 1-2 times a week and that wet bag STINKS!! It’s also becoming much harder to get them clean so PLEASE don’t do what I do – do what I say instead!!! Keep up your wash routine every 2-3 days at the most!!

50% of the time we wake up dry! Wooo Hooo! The rest of the time I think (not positive) she’s wetting first thing in the morning and just too lazy to go to the bathroom. Seriously I have a stubborn, lazy, red headed daughter!!

I’m not in the least bit worried about nighttime training.

My husband thinks I’m hanging on to the cloth diapers because I don’t want to be done with them (he’s wrong – I’m just lazy and know she’ll get it eventually)!

My son was day and night trained all at the same time and MUCH earlier than 3. She’s just stubborn like I said. What about you? Is your tot nighttime trained? Share your stories because I REALLY want to know that I’m not alone.

“I’ve been pinning for nine months, 2 days, and 12 hours.” That’s pretty close to what I would say if there were a Pinterest-anonymous. I’ve been on Pinterest since the Fall of 2011 and I love everything about it. It’s a great way to learn new things and see some wild ideas – or just get sucked away from work for hours!

If you are relatively new to Pinterest you may be a little confused by some of the terms and features like; pinning, repinning, like, boards, and following. I recently received an advanced copy of Kelby Carr’s newest book, Pinterest for Dummies, and couldn’t put it down. In fact, after about 2 hours I have finished the entire book, highlighted my favorite parts and dog-eared the pages I need to go back to. You can officially call me a Pinterest-junkie now!

Kelby Carr is a one of the most well known Pinterest users with over 3,000 followers and thousands of pins! She is also the founder and CEO of Type-A-Parent, a social media network, blog, and conference. If there is someone who knows anything about being ‘social’ on the internet – Kelby is your girl. My first experience with Kelby was a few years ago when her ebook helped me make some much needed improvements on my blog.

Who should read Pinterest for Dummie? Everyone! Yes, even an expert pinner can find at least a few new things in the book. I would highly recommend it to any blogger who is using Pinterest to help reach readers. I would highly recommend it to any company who wants to learn more about using Pinterest for marketing. And of course, if you just love Pinterest and want to learn to navigate your way through your favorite boards without getting sucked in for hours…then yes, you should read it too!

What will you learn in Pinterest for Dummies? You’ll learn the basics of Pinterest, how to be social on Pinterest, Pinterest Etiquette, and fun new ways to use Pinterest in your life. As a blogger one of the tips that I learned was about the ideal size of an image you plan on pinning – did you know that anything less than 200 pixels will appear grainy and pixelated?

Would you like to win a free copy of Pinterest for Dummies? Complete the steps in the Rafflecopter application below (may not be visible from all mobile devices and feeds) between now and May 15th (midnight ET) and you’ll be entered to win! Giveaway is open to residents of the US and Canada over the age of 18yrs old. *Note: Only the first step is mandatory for entry. Completing the extra steps will earn you additional entries.

Use coupon code BLOGGER and receive free shipping on your order of $35 or more (Limit 1 coder per order. Limit 1 use per customer. Excludes the purchase of Ruby Moon or Rockin Green products. Valid on standard shipping within the Continental U.S. only. Does not include upgrades to USPS Priority or UPS insured shipping. Not valid on pending or previous orders. Offer expires May 31, 2012 at midnight ET.).

Confession: I used disposable wipes for the first several months and off-and-on over the past 3 years on my baby girl!

It was our first experience with cloth diapers (which are intimidating at first to all of us) and we just couldn’t embrace cloth wipes full-time. It was several months after she was born that I slowly began to add cloth wipes to our routine but I still to this day have a pack of disposable wipes in the house.

I actually learned to love cloth wipes and used them almost exclusively most of the time (redundant – maybe) either in our wipes warmer or with a spray solution. I personally found that spraying the bum and wiping with a cloth wipe to be easier (lazy mom’s way) than the wipes warmer, plus there is no prepping required. But sometimes I just wanted to pull out a wipe – wipe off the poop – and throw it away!!

Did you know that most disposable wipes contain chemicals that are unsafe for your baby? Just like baby wash and lotion, some brands of wipes can contain parabens, alcohol, citric acid, perfume, and other chemicals I can’t even pronounce. These chemicals can cause rashes and long term exposure can be carcinogenic.

Thankfully there are brands that are more natural and kinder on your babies bum. WaterWipes is a brand from Ireland that consist of 99.9% water and 0.1% grapefruit seed extract on a biodegradable cotton wool. Free of preservatives and synthetic chemicals.

It’s nice to finally have a brand of wipes that I don’t have to feel guilty about having in the house. Even though we’re almost potty trained I find myself using wipes to clean up sticky fingers and faces on the go.

For more information watch this short video about WaterWipes and the Great Bottom Campaign. For every 10 “Likes” WaterWipes gets on Facebook they will donate a pack of WaterWipes to help premature babies.

Disclosure: WaterWipes sent me product to review and no other compensation was received.
