Travel Update & Book Review

I made it safe and sound to my destination and I didn't have nearly as much waste as normal today.  I did use my water bottle (refillable) all day.  Note to you travelers: don't fill it until you get past security since you can't take liquids through.  I filled it at the nearest water fountain which was tricky when only a trickle of water came out of the spout.  Maybe next time I will fill it at a restaurant instead.  The only waste I had was from the wrapper of my taco's that I had for lunch.  I even borrowed a book from the library instead of buying one at the airport.  Today's book is "The World Without Us" by Alan Weisman.  I'm only about 50 pages into the book but I want to read more.  It's exactly what the title suggests; what would the world be like without us.  The writer is very vivid and his use of imagery is wonderful.  He has an extensive Bibliography section and a web site so I imagine I will be doing some homework when I'm done.  The only warning is that the book is ... Trashy Thursday – Making Music

Here is a neat little musical instrument little man and I made for our new friends in Toronto, the Village Mama and family.  We had to go for a nature walk to find just the right sticks for the project.  The only requirement was that they had to form a 'Y' shape.  The two sticks we found weren't that strong so be sure to look for some sturdy sticks.  The next step was to paint the sticks with your favorite paint (we used acrylic paint from the craft store) and let them dry.  While they are drying we got to go outside and have some fun with the bottle caps.  Since we have someone in the house that drinks beer it's not hard to find bottle caps lying around.  We took the bottle caps (you can use as many or as few as you like...they make more noise with more caps) outside and hammered a nail into the middle of each one to make the hole for stringing.  Next we sanded each one with a small piece of sandpaper so the paint would adhere well.  Finally we painted each bottle cap and ... Earth Day 24/7

I made a trip to Wal-Mart the other day and found a few green products worth blogging about.  First was the dish detergent.  I was out of our traditional Electrosol powdered detergent and had planned on picking up the same product.  However, when I saw a liquid dish detergent by Palmolive called Eco I knew I had to try it.  To my surprise it was a few dollars cheaper too.  So I tried my first load last night and guess worked great!  I didn't notice any difference from my old Electrosol.  So I guess I've found my new product.  It's phosphate free so it won't extra nutrients into the water system.  The next item was a total surprise, especially at Wal-Mart.  They had a display of environmental themed t-shirts.  Not only do they have a good message on them; they are also made from organic cotton.  How cool is that?  And for a total of $6 it couldn't have been a better deal!  I picked up one that said, "Green is the new black!" for myself.  This adds to my new eco-tee ...
