Tips for Traveling with Cloth Diapers

By car: This mode of transportation is the easiest way to travel with cloth diaper because the only limiting factor is how much available space you have left in your car after you’ve packed all of your luggage. As you already know, babies require a LOT of extra luggage depending upon what resources are available at your destination. Any type of cloth diapers can be packed when traveling by car and you can stuff them in any open space that is left. I found that reusable shopping bags from the grocery store are a good method for packing cloth diapers by car because they are open and easy to access when you need to grab a diaper.

By air: Traveling by air can be a little more challenging primarily because you are limited by the number of bags you can bring with you. Since most air carriers are charging for luggage you’ll want to pack as compact as possible. Most air carriers will allow you to check your car seat for free – purchase a car seat bags (like these) can be used to protect your car seat but they can also be used to stash some of your cloth diaper stash without having to pay for an extra bag. (Tip provided by Kim @ Dirty Diaper Laundry) Trimmer diapers are best when packing with limited space. Many people prefer to travel with AIO’s, flats, and covers due to their ease of use and trimness. When traveling by air you can always pack less and wash more if you have to.

Disposable – Hybrid – or 100% Cloth Diapers? Which should I take with me? This really depends on where you are going, how long you are going to be gone, and what your washing facilities will be like. Disposable diapers were actually invented to make diapering while traveling more convenient. I will admit that I have resorted to using disposable diapers in the early days when we traveled because I wasn’t brave enough to try 100% cloth. If that is what you choose don’t feel bad or guilty – feel proud that you use cloth diapers the rest of the time and know that you will appreciate them more when you get home. Hybrid diapers (like the Flip and GroVia disposable inserts) are a nice option that blends cloth with disposables. You can use your favorite covers or shells and simply place a very trim disposable insert in the cover. The GroVia disposables are actually the trimmest insert that I’ve tried. Hybrids are nice to use the night before you leave after you’ve washed all of your cloth diapers. Depending upon how long you will be gone for you don’t want to leave dirty diapers at home if you can help it. On one of our last trips when my daughter was 1.5 yrs old we took both hybrid and cloth and it worked out well. I ended up using cloth the majority of the time because I’m so comfortable using it – no learning curve.

100% Cloth Diapers with Flats & Covers: This is by far my favorite method for traveling with cloth diapers. For starters flats are very trim and absorbent. They are inexpensive and very versatile. They are easier to launder and if you absolutely must – they can be hand washed very easily and dry within a few short hours. They don’t take up much space in your luggage either. If you can wash every night or every other night you will only need to pack 12-24 flats and a set of 6+ covers. One of my favorite articles on traveling with flats is from Heather McNamara of the Real Diaper Association – she traveled to a rain forest in Panama with her cloth diapers!

Laundry options while traveling: This can be the most stressful or challenging part of traveling with cloth diapers – determining where to wash your cloth diapers. If you are staying with family or friends you simply need to let your guests know that you’ll be needing to borrow their washing machine while you are there. It is courteous to have this discussion ahead of time so they aren’t shocked when you ask to launder dirty diapers in their machine. If you aren’t lucky enough to be staying at a place with a washing machine there are still some additional options:

Hotels, cruise ships, and resorts often have laundry facilities on-site. Some will let you use their machines while others have coin operated machines available for guests. A phone call in advance can help you plan your wash routine.

Resorts will sometimes have washing machines in the room. It may be worth the extra money to choose a resort over a hotel. When traveling with small children resorts are nice because most of them also have kitchens which will help you save money when feeding those little tummies.

Coin operated laundry. You may need to resort to a coin operated laundry if there aren’t any other options on-site. Remember to pack some quarters.

Hand washing – don’t be scared to use the sink or tub to wash your diapers in the evening. If you are traveling with flats they are the easiest cloth diapers to hand wash and will only take about 30 minutes in the evening. They will dry quickly over night and will be ready to use when you get up the next day.

Don’t forget the laundry detergent! Regardless of where you launder your diapers don’t forget to pack some sample packages of your favorite detergent. You don’t want to spend your holiday stressing out over detergent – especially when most stores are closed on the actual holiday.

Question: How do I ensure that the washing machine I will be using doesn’t have build up from detergents or fabric softeners? I’ve heard that they can transfer to my cloth diapers.

Answer: While you can’t ensure that the machine you are about to use if clean and hasn’t been used with fabric softeners you can easily do a hot water wash cycle with no clothes to quickly clean the machine. If you have other laundry to wash you can wash them without fabric softeners to provide a cleanse on the machine. While 1 cycle may not remove everything it will help prevent most problems that you’ll encounter with cloth diapers. When you get back home you may want to strip your diapers really well to ensure that you remove any foreign substances that you may have brought back with you from the machine.

Diaper Services: Another often overlooked option when traveling is to research diaper services in the area you’re traveling to. Most diaper services have short term plans just for travelers. They don’t normally advertise them on their websites so you may need to call them to inquire about the rates. With diaper services you normally need to bring diaper covers with you and they supply you with prefolds and a wet bag. You can arrange to have your diapers delivered to a hotel or wherever you are staying. When you leave all you have to do is pack up the dirty diapers and the diaper service will pick them up for you.

Regardless of how you decide to travel with your diapers remember that you don’t want to spend your entire time away stressing about them. Do what works best for you and your family. A few minutes planning before your trip will help you travel stress free. Have you traveled with cloth diapers? What system worked best for you? Do you have additional tips or tricks to share?

2. Why are pecan trees always spaced out so evenly in rows?

3. When traveling with a dog your only options for food is fast food and I’m SICK of fast food!! I’m dying for a real meal!! The closest I got was a Wendy’s baked potato; however they forgot to put the butter in the bag so even that didn’t satisfy me.

4. Kids can fall asleep anywhere!

5. I don’t like driving my husbands car because the left arm rest is too high and is uncomfortable. Since he drove most of the trip I’m not complaining.

6. Foursquare thinks my husband’s my BFF because we spent the last 3 days checking in together. Awe!

7. Cars need to come with power strips these days! We had a total six items all fighting for the 2 plugs in the car.

8. My kids get along sooooo good! It wasn’t until the last 30 minutes that the were loud, cranky, and annoying. Why is it that every rhyme, song, and joke they tell one another has to include pee, poop, underwear, or eating brains?

8. My cat had a party, got drunk, and threw up around the house!

I’m glad to be home! What things do you learn when you travel with your family?

…I seem to have disappeared for a few days (over a week actually) but don’t worry I’m back now! I was traveling with work this past week and had the opportunity to attend the ABC Kids Expo in Lexington, KY. The expo is the largest babies and kids product expo/trade show in the US and when I say it was HUGE that is an understatement. I think it took me 20 minutes to walk from one end of the show to the other, and only if I didn’t stop to look at something along the way. Many of the favorite cloth diaper manufacturers were present with booths trying to show off their products (and a few new surprises) to retailers from around the country. In addition to cloth diapers, companies were there showing off strollers, car seats, pregnancy and maternity products, breastfeeding products, toys, clothing, and the list continues. Until you actually go you’ll never truly understand just how large this expo really is.

I think I worked for over 12 hours a day each day of the expo in addition to set up and take down (that makes 5 days in all). Plus when the expo was over the annual Real Diaper Industry Association held their annual meeting for another 2 days. In all I don’t think I slept for more than 6 hrs a night for a total of 7 days. I am physically and emotionally drained but extremely energized at the same time. Seeing and meeting all of these amazing companies and the people who run them really gives you a sense of pride in the cloth diapering community.

I have so much to share with you but it’s going to have to wait a few more days. I’m taking a few days off from the blog to recharge and prepare for a busy October. We are bringing you 3 fabulous Twitter parties with Charlie Banana & Charlies Soap, Kelly Wells (and a ton of sponsors), and our annual DiaperShops.com Fluff-or-Treat Halloween Inspired Twitter Party! Are you ready for the excitement to begin??? Be sure to stay connected with us on Facebook for all of the official announcements – registration will open for these by early next week.

I’m off to get some sleep so that I can stay awake during my sons Writing Celebration event tomorrow at school. 3rd grade is an exciting year and I’m so proud to see him finally challenged in his education.

I’m only awake because of the Starbucks I had before we got there but this is us after a day of traveling.

And that is how we spent day 1 (arrival day) in San Diego for BlogHer. I’m sure I won’t see my hubby much after this afternoon once I find all my blogger friends so it was nice to have a day with him and our friends before the madness begins. I got a pretty good amount of sleep but I still woke up at 6am PST so I may need a nap this afternoon to keep up tonight.

The past few weekends we’ve ventured out of comfort zone (pool, beach, shopping at Target, etc) and visited parts of Florida that we wouldn’t normally visit. We’ve gone outside and enjoyed the natural beauty that surrounds us and haven’t had to go very far. I’m hoping this new trend will continue and we’ll see more natural Florida with the kids.

Last weekends trip was to Ichetucknee Springs (don’t ask me to say it because I butcher it and sound like a redneck!) in Fort White, FL near the Florida/Georgia border. From the State Parks website:

The crystalline Ichetucknee River flows six miles through shaded hammocks and wetlands before it joins the Santa Fe River.

The pictures show just how crystalline the water is but it doesn’t show you how cold it is! Year round 73F – which for Florida water is down right FREEZING! You loose your breath when you jump in but you feel so alive!

A picture of the Blue Hole – you can actually dive down inside the hole (I didn’t attempt this).

Random beauties…

If you get there early enough you can even tube down the river. They only allow 750 people on the river each day to help preserve the natural beauty and people started lining up before 7am (they don’t open until 8am). Plan to show up early (and only during the summer – Memorial Day through Labor Day) and rent a tube (or bring your own) at a nearby local store (there are tons of options). The tubes will cost you about $5-10 per tube. You can choose from a single tube, a double tube, and a closed bottom tube for the kiddos. You can even rent inflatable rafts (boats) if you don’t want to get wet. Don’t worry though, if you’re not the tubing type you can always swim at the springs too.

The park really does a great job at keeping the river pristine and won’t allow you to bring food or drinks down the river either. If you can’t take trash you can’t leave it behind! Eat a hearty breakfast because you’ll be on the river for 2-3 hours before you get to the mid-point. You can get off at the mid-point and eat lunch (your car is actually parked here) then continue down the river if you want to. We only made it to the mid-point because we’d been up with friends talking and drinking around the campfire the night before (well actually until about 3am for some of them).

We rented cabins nearby at the Ichetucknee Hideaway Cottages and absolutely fell in love. It was like camping but with a cabin. They are actually manufactured homes and have one bedroom, one bathroom, a kitchen/dining room, and living room. There are 6 cabins on the property and each one comes with a screened in front porch, a fire pit, a grill, and a swing. We had 4 of the 6 cabins rented with our group and it was a perfect place for families. Once you put the kids to bed you can hang out by the firepit and chat all night long.

A sneak peek of cottage #2 on the inside. Very clean and tidy. Fully stocked with plates, glassware, silverware, and other essentials that you’ll need. If you don’t feel like cooking or grilling out you can also visit the corner pub, The Keg Room. The boys had fun hanging out with the locals one night while that ladies chatted around the fire.

This weekend Lil’ B mastered the skill of climbing a ladder on the playground. Don’t laugh – I think this was her first time going up a ladder on a playground! She did great!

She also mastered S’MORES!

Last year I was honored to be on the BlogHer Green Team to help advice them on ways to make the conference a little bit more eco-friendly. I hope that our efforts and our ideas are considered again this year during their planning and that maybe they implement a few new green initiatives each year. The official BlogHer sponsors (the one’s that help keep our costs down, pay for the food we eat, pay for the speakers we listen to, and provide a lot of the swag we love) dictate a lot of the areas in which raise concern with some of the eco-minded attendees so there are limitations on how far BlogHer can change things. Regardless of what steps BlogHer and the sponsors provide we can each do our own part to help green our own experiences in California.

1. Carpool, take public transportation, or walk! One of the most amazing things about BlogHer is the ability to connect with other bloggers. As it gets closer to the arrival date start tweeting with the #blogher11 tag and look for a ride to share to the hotel. According to the Marriott website shuttle service is provided for $8/pp and taxi fare is $12/pp from SAN airport. You could also take public transportation which I understand is quite easy in California. Here is the link to the transit website. http://www.sdcommute.com/

2. Reduce the Swag you take! – Even if you only gather official conference sponsor swag you will still encounter at TON of stuff you may not need. I took home an entire suitcase full of swag along with an extra box that I mailed home. From what I understand there were some attendees who had to ship several boxes home so I guess I didn’t do too bad. Be mindful of what you collect. If it’s not something that you will ever use don’t take it. If it’s something that challenges your beliefs or is against what you believe in (maybe a sponsor you don’t support) then don’t take their swag. You can still engage in conversation with a sponsor and connect with them if you don’t take their stuff – saying no may actually make you stand out from the crowd.

3. Use the Recycle Suite! Last year BlogHer provided a drop off room where attendees could drop off any swag they received that they later decided they didn’t want. This room was open to other attendees who may be interested in those items. Leftover items are then managed in a mindful way – either given back to the sponsors, donated to a local charity, or recycled. Whatever you do, don’t throw something out if it won’t fit into your luggage on the last day. There is someone who will appreciate what you don’t want. Otherwise, keep it and give it as a gift to someone back home or hold a giveaway for it on your blog.

4. Carry a refillable water bottle! It would surprise me if you didn’t end up with at least 5 water bottles from the sponsors at BlogHer so you may not need to bring your own. Carry the bottles with you everywhere you go during the conference. Last year they had water filling stations set up in most of the conference spaces so you could easily refill them throughout the day.

5. Reuse and get Crafty! Are you a crafty person? Do you like to upcycle? Find ways to reuse some of the swag you receive when you get home and turn them into fun DIY projects and tutorials for you blog. The sponsors will appreciate the shout out and your readers will appreciate the fun projects. I have a box of t-shirts that I craft with making scarves and other fun projects for friends around the holidays.

6. Bring your own Utensils! This is just as easy as bringing your own water bottle. I have a set of RePEaT utensil sets that I like to keep in my purse. They are small and compact and will help you reduce waste when you are only provided with disposable utensils. The conference space itself is really good about providing regular reusable utensils but if you go off-site or eat out these will come in handy – especially while traveling.

7. Bring a Straw! Say what? Don’t add to the waste by using disposable straws when you can bring your own glass straw. I have a set of straws that I received a few years ago and they fit nicely into my RePEat case. I’m not as diligent as I would like to be with straws but it’s an easy way to reduce your personal impact.

8. Shop your Closet! Looking for a new outfit to take to BlogHer? Shop your closet first and find out what treasures you may already have hidden. Remember that little black dress that you wore 3 years ago – it may still fit right? Add some sparkly new jewelry or a new pair of flashy shoes and bring that outfit back to life. Another option is to shop your friends closet or a thrift store. I’ll probably be hitting up Marshall’s or TJ Max to find a few new pieces to dress up the outfits I already have. Just remember to be yourself – but kick it up a notch! BlogHer is a great time to experiment because if you stand out in the crowd that’s not always a bad thing.

9. Reuse your Towels and Sheet! How often do you change your sheets at home? How often do you grab a new towel at home? Most of us (even those OCD types) do this about once a week unless the items are really dirty. Since we’re all staying for 2-5 days there really isn’t a reason to change your sheets and towels every day is there? Of course there may be a spilled drink or some other random accident that causes you to have to have them laundered but under normal conditions your sheets and towels will be fine for the duration of your stay. If we all requested to save our sheets and towels we would collectively save the hotels thousands of gallons of water.

10. Bringing Baby? Bring Cloth Diapers! You can travel with cloth diapers so pack them up and bring them with you. If I were toting my tot with me I would be packing up my flats and washing in the sink for a few days. Otherwise look up a local cloth diapering service on the Real Diaper Association’s website and set up a short term service while you’re in town. Just give them a call and tell them what your needs are – most services have travel packages available and will deliver right to your hotel.

What about you? How else will you reduce your environmental impact while traveling to BlogHer ’11? Are you a green or cloth diapering mama? Join our conversation on Facebook – Green and Cloth Diapering Mama’s Going to BlogHer ’11 page.

Gearing up for BlogHer ’11

With only one month left I have a lot of planning left to do. I scheduled a phone call with a friend (and designer and techie guru and all around support person) Mommy Doodles this week to be sure that we were aligned on some projects I want to complete for BlogHer. While I ‘could’ do some of these things myself she can get them done in about 1/4th the time and they will look much more professional than anything I would ever create. Here’s just a snippet of my list of projects:

Fix Eco Chic Parties blog that I messed up (i.e. deleted – yes all of it!) last week while trying to clean house.

Back up The Eco Chic blog properly since I realized we’ve been doing this wrong the whole time and I lost all of Eco Chic Parties past posts.

Clean house on The Eco Chic blog. After almost 4 years of being playing web master I think it’s time to look into some professional help. First step is working with Melanie (Mommy Doodles) to see how much she can do before I look elsewhere.

Continue to work with my Rockin’ sponsor, Rockin’ Green Soap, to make sure that we meet all of our deadlines and targets.

Update business cards for BlogHer ’11 since last years are already out of date.

Work with Melanie to design some cool t-shirts for me to wear during BlogHer ’11. Can’t share my ideas just yet but it will be very cute!

Work with Melanie to design an iPhone and iPad case personalized for BlogHer ’11.

Encourage my BFF to get her own business cards to hand out even though she has a super secret blog that I’ve never seen. She still needs to have something on hand.

Make plans for the boys (our husbands are joining us) for when we’re all <del>partying</del> geeking it up at the conference.

Make plans with an old co-worker and some friends who live in the area.

Call hotel and see if I can have a box (or two) shipped to the hotel for when I get there.

Work with my employer and see if they want me to do any promoting (coupons, giveaways, etc) while I’m there.

Pray that my iPhone app is approved before then so I can include a link to that on all my goodies.

Work with Melanie to design and create my newest blog project so that I can reveal it during BlogHer ’11.

Continue to work with some niche bloggers to come up with an idea for a super secret event that I am afraid won’t happen if I don’t get a kick in the butt!

Compile a list of people I absolutely must meet and mingle with during BlogHer ’11.

Look over the BlogHer agenda and decide what sessions I really want to attend.

Invite all my niche bloggers to a Birds of a Feather lunch on Friday during BlogHer ’11.

Continue to build our little Facebook group for Green & Cloth Diapering Mama’s going to BlogHer ’11. Join us won’t you!

As you can see I have more than enough work to keep me busy for the next 33 days. What am I forgetting?
Do you have any special plans that you have in mind for BlogHer?
Any special or new projects? Do you think you’ll get them all completed by then?

Shortly after takeoff I looked out the plane window and noticed the most beautiful full moon over the water. The reflexion was a pale red on the water and the sky was dark. Noting else was visible.

To my right side I could see the sun rising through the clouds. The colors were pale orange, pink, purple, and blue.

I shifted my eyes back to the moon which looked bigger and brighter than it had before. As time passed the sky shifted from black to navy as the moon slowly lowered in the sky. A few moments later the moon changed colors from bright white to an intense ball of fire. The intensity grew stronger as the sun rose on the other side of the plane.

Then slowly and softly the moon sunk lower and lower in the sky until it was barely visible in the dawn sky.

…and then the sun rose and the moon set.

I love watching the world from the plane window as I feel like a bird flying above the clouds. You gain a new perspective when you look at things from above. Have you ever experienced anything this beautiful from a unique perspective? Underwater looking up? That would be interesting too. This was just the beginning of our trip to Costa Rica.

I’m back!! My honey and I just got back from our 7 day adventure in Costa Rica for our 10 year anniversary. This was one of those dream vacations that was probably bigger in my head than it was in real life. I have been researching travel tips for over a year now and I think we did good with the time we had.

We stayed the first few nights in Arenal/La Fortuna area and the end of the trip in the Papagayo Gulf Coast on the Pacific. There is so much more I would love to see in Costa Rica so I’m sure I’ll be making a return trip one day.

I’ll be sharing some of my travel tips and advice on my mom’s travel blog (CJ’s Great Getaways) later this week. She’s not very blog savvy so she’ll love your comments when the post(s) are up. And if you are ever in the need of a travel agent send her an email and she can help you plan your next trip too.

As for me…I’ll be returning this week with some great new content, tips, and BIG news! I’ll be revealing my BlogHer 11 sponsor. I’ll be reviewing some more cloth diapers. I’ll be reviewing some other eco-friendly products that I have on hand. I’ll tell you the most fail-proof way to potty train your tot…it’s really good too! And I may even have a giveaway or two in store for you.

In the meantime leave me a comment below telling me about the best vacation you’ve ever taken. I’m ready to start planning for our next trip…next time we’ll even take the kids with us.
