Working through mom guilt…

CellPhone1

It happened, my six year old told me something brutally honest this morning. "Mommy, put your phone down! You're always playing on it. Won't you play with me instead."   (silence - let that soak in)   ...I immediately set the phone down and finished helping her get ready for school.  I made a conscious effort to not pick up my phone for the rest of the morning.  I dropped the kids off at school, came home and went to work, but those words stuck with me ALL day! Am I really on my phone THAT much? Clearly, if a six year old thinks I'm on my phone too much then it's got to be true. Here's the thing though, I have made an effort for the past year to be more present in my kids lives.  Not that I'm a absent mom (absent minded maybe, but not absent), but it's so easy to focus too much effort on the wrong things.  I've made an effort to leave my phone on my desk when the kids are home from school in the afternoon, during dinner, and while they get ready for bed. ... Techie Gift Gear Ideas

Techie Gift Gear

If you are anything like me, this is the week you scramble trying to find just the right gift for everyone on your list. I do most of my shopping online so this is THE week to get stuff ordered so it will arrive in time.  Here are just a few of my favorite techie finds this year that may or may not be found under the tree on Christmas morning. Powerslayer by Velvetwire: Can you ever have too many iPhone chargers laying around? In a house full of techies we're always fighting over the cords and you can never find them all when you need them.  With my old iPhone 5, I would constantly need to charge it because the battery was shot.  With the Powerslayer you eliminate wasted power because it automatically turns itself off once your device is fully charged.  Once my phone reached about 90-95% the Powerslayer would shut off; you could tell when the LED indicator on the front shut off.  The Powerslayer comes with a very long braided USB cable and a felt and leather travel case. I loved ... [ Read More ]

What My Misfit Shine Has Taught Me

Misfit Shine Fitness Tracker

Activity and fitness trackers are all the rage these days.  Almost weekly I see friends in my Facebook feed asking for advice on which one to get.  I've had my Misfit since May after I met some of their marketing team at Mom 2.0 blogging conference in Atlanta and have been wearing it everyday since then.  I'm not a fitness fanatic and honestly I don't really make working out a priority most days (I know I should...I know!!). My Misfit Shine has actually taught me a lot about myself, my daily activity, and even a little about my sleep patterns.  Thankfully, I've learned I'm not always a lazy bum! 1. I'm not lazy!  OK, well not every day at least.  Being a mom, working full-time, taking care of the house (hahahaha, yeah right), running kids to school and extraciricular activities, and shopping actually keep me more active than I ever imagined.  My least active days are usually Monday and Tuesday when I'm strapped to my computer for hours trying to catch up from the weekend off ... The Candy Crush Curse

Candy Crush Curse

Look familiar?  That ONE lone jelly just sitting their taunting you on Candy Crush!  What, you don't play Candy Crush? If you're on Facebook you've probably received those "requests" we all hate to play your stupid game or donate lives so you can get to the next level.  I've seen them for months and resisted the temptation to download another time suck game to my iPhone.  I have no idea what made me take the leap a few days ago and see what all the addiction was about - but I did - and no you may never see me blog again!  Remember that feeling you got when you first jumped on Pinterest and pinned beautiful pictures of crafts you'll never made for HOURS at a time?  Yeah, that's how I feel about Candy Crush today. It starts out so innocently as you easily complete the first few levels.  You're sitting at your sons karate class clearing level after level until this happens.... ...just like that time you ran out of your favorite ice cream at midnight after the stores are closed - ... Update on Positive Parenting and Kid Pointz

It's been 12 days since I installed the Kid Pointz parenting app on my iPhone and iPad.  I'm a tad bit excited about how well it's working for us and thought I'd give you an update. My kids both love the award and reward system.  They actually look for ways to earn a few more points each day.  At the beginning my son was so excited that he woke up before me and completed his daily chores so he could earn his reward points sooner.  They both have the opportunity to earn about 7-10 points a day, with a few extras that I can apply for really good (above average) behavior. Below are a few tasks my kids can earn points for (not a complete list): Practicing karate (my oldest) Brushing their teeth (both) Cleaning their room (both) Placing their clothes in the hamper (both) Doing the dishes (my oldest) Eating all their food (both) Feeding the pets (my oldest) Getting dressed without help (my toddler) Having a good day at school (both) and a few other random chores ... Is that a mophie in your pocket or are you just happy to see me

Mophie

mophie: portable charging devices for your iPhone (iPad or iTouch). As I was packing for BlogHer I realized that I needed to find myself a portable charging device for my dying phone.  I'm holding on tightly to my ancient iPhone 3GS in anticipation for the release of the iPhone 5.  I was so sad when they released the 4S because I am in dire need of an update.  My poor 3GS has been very well loved but the 4S just didn't do it for me.  Sadly she doesn't hold much of a charge these days and would never make it through a day at a blogging conference. In a building with 5,000+ bloggers I didn't stand a chance at finding a plug to charge my phone during the day and even if I did I would have to sit in that spot waiting for it to charge.  After posing a question to a group of women going to BlogHer I was introduced to my new lover...mophie!  It was love at first sight! mophie makes an entire line of portable charging devices.  Some are external chargers where you plug your phone into ... iPhone Photography: The Visual Guide by Alli Worthington

I'm a huge fan of iPhone photography, in fact I have over 40 photography related apps on my phone.  I always have my phone with me and some of my favorite photos were taken from it; including many that you see on this blog. Last week while I was getting ready to pack for our trip I stumbled upon an ebook, iPhone Photography, by Alli Worthington.  I didn't even realize Alli had written an ebook (I'm a bad blogger and don't keep up with what everyone is doing) but I knew it would be good.  If you don't know who Alli is, she is a blogger and the founder of the Blissdom blogging conferences.  She is beautiful, spirited, and incredibly talented.  I immediately purchased the ebook so I could have some reading for our trip. WOW!!  I wasn't prepared for 173 pages full of gorgeous iPhone images, tips, app recommendations, and personal photography advice.  I read the entire thing on our car ride up to the cabins.  I immediately installed several new apps (mostly free) that I'm learning to ... Must Have Kids Apps

Must Have Apps for Kids

Does your child use your iPhone or iPad (or other mobile device)?  I think our iPad has begun to look like a child's toy more than it does an adult tool.  My husband is actually regretting setting it up with his account because everything we download on the iPad ends up clogging his iPad too. What are some of your favorite kids apps?  I have a few new apps that my kids are enjoying. Scholatic Reading Timer:  I don't need to encourage my oldest bookworm to read but this app is nice because it allows us to log our summer reading hours.  It lets you create accounts for each child, provides parents with useful tips, and gives kids some suggested books to read based on their age.  Cost: Free Storia:  Another fun app for kids by Scholastic.  This is a eReader app just for kids.  It includes 5 free ebooks.  While this app is free the additional books do cost a few dollars each and can add up if you have a kid who loves to read.  Cost: Free + cost of additional books. #marchphotoaday Challenge on Instagram (and everywhere else) with @FatMumSlim

#marchphotoaday

February is almost over and my favorite month is coming up - March!  Why is March my favorite month?  #1) My birthday is on the Ides of March, #2) My anniversary is the first week of March, and #3) My oldest turns 9 on St. Patty's Day!  I am 100% Pisces and my son shares many of my traits as well.  I love spring!  I love seeing flowers in bloom (but I hate the pollen).  I love the first real beach trip of the year.  I love Spring Training baseball.  I love everything about March!!   It's also time for a new Photo-a-Day challenge with @Fatmumslim!  Every month I get a little better and one of these days I may actually finish a challenge!  For February I did great until I left for Blissdom.  I'm a few days (ok - 5 days) behind and should probably catch up! What is #MarchPhotoADay?  You can read all of the 'rules' over on the @Fatmumslim blog.  It's amazing how many people are participating in the challenge and I love following all of you on Instagram (and Twitter and Facebook) and love ...
