Tips for Celebrating Earth Day with Your Children

Tips for Celebrating Earth Day With Kids @TheEcoChic

Do your kids share the love of nature with you?  How do you teach them to be good environmental stewards and take care of the gifts that have been given to us?  Earth Day is a good reminder for us to teach these lessons to our children; not just one day a year but every day.  Take a few minutes today and show your children some of the beautiful things that surround them and how they can preserve those treasures.  Here are a few fun ways I like to celebrate Earth Day with my kids:

Take a family trip to the recycling center.Don’t save this chore for the weekends or for dad; do it together as a family and show your children what happens when the recycling truck comes and hauls off your trash.  Many recycling centers have community educators that are available to share how recycling benefits your local community.

Start a garden.  Kids love to play in the dirt and be outside.  Set aside a small area in your backyard to start your own family garden with your favorite fruits and vegetables.  Tomatoes, cucumbers, and lettuce are all easy to grow and you can use the food at dinnertime.  If you don’t have much room for a garden consider starting a small container garden on a porch or patio.  There are some great tips for how to garden when space is limited in Urban Gardening For Dummies (affiliate link).

Upcycled crafting.  My kids look forward to days when I decide to get the craft supplies out and create.  The best tools of any craft kit can come straight from the garbage.  Old newspapers, toilet paper rolls, empty cereal boxes, milk jugs, and stained clothing can all be used to spark the creativity in your child.

Beach cleanup.  This is actually something we like to do every time we visit the beach.  You’d be surprised how much trash you find littered around the beach.  We pack a plastic grocery bag for each of the kids and as they find trash (cigarette butts, straws, wrappers, etc) they collect it and trash it on our way home.  Just be sure to give them some warnings to not pick up sharp objects or anything that may harm them.  If you are a germ-a-phobe you may want to bring some gloves; we just wash our hands really good before we leave.

Nature hike.  There are lots of great nature trails where we live that would be a fun way to teach your kids about nature.  Take a camera and let them take pictures of flowers, animals, and plants that they want to learn more about.  Bring along a sketch book and pencil so they can practice drawing nature.  Children are great at asking questions so let them lead the conversation.  Don’t be worried about not knowing the answer, you can always look it up.

What are your plans for Earth Day?  How will you be celebrating and teaching your own kids the importance of caring for our environment?
