Today was the first day in a week that we woke up with a leak! EEEK! My tot insists on going pee pee on the potty every night before bed and last night she sat, and sat, and sat but never peed. When she woke up this morning she said, “Mommy my bankie wet.” I knew what had happened obviously. We used a single pad folded flat (birdseye cotton) inside a Flip and it just couldn’t hold a full nights worth of toddler pee.
Tips for Overnights (or Heavy Wetters) When Using Flat Cloth Diapers
- Double up the layers by using two flat diapers before you fold and place in your cover.
- Add your favorite insert inside a pad folded flat to increase the absorbency.
- Use a hemp flat like Hemp Babies (alone or with an extra insert).
- Use a fleece or wool cover that will catch any leaks and keep them contained.
Tonight we are trying our Flip cover with a pad folded Hemp Babies. Here are my pictures (just excuse the bad lighting and poor iPhone quality – my camera is out of town at the moment) that show how I folded it to fit nicely inside my cover.
Because of the large size you’ll want to fold over about 2 inches before you pad fold a Hemp Babies.
Continue to fold over the sides like you would with any pad fold.
The finished pad folded Hemp Babies with both sides folded in.
Fits nicely inside the Flip cover and looks cute on the tot!H owever I won’t be sharing that photo tonight because she was a HOT mess after another crazy day/night. Because of the crazy day we’ve had I only washed our covers in the sink and will leave our flats (only 4 used today along with 2 pairs of panties) in the bucket to soak tonight. I’ll wash them in the morning.

Thank you so much for the wonderful tips, I have been using double pad folded flats for our overnight dipes. Are we allowed to use MF inserts in the #flatschallenge? Also, are you line drying your wipes? I have been, but they are sooo stiff
you ARE allowed a “night time diaper” that is not a flat, if you can’t make flats work for you. so an MF insert would be okay in a pocket for overnight, but not during the day
flats only during the day.
re: wipes, mine are flannel and get super crunchy too
it’s kind of hilarious. ironing them would prob help. s/o said in the fb group that they use the gerber washcloths as wipes and they don’t get stiff like that. i’d imagine jersey knit ones like the Charlie Banana would be less crunchy as well.
This was actually a post from last years event when the rules were a little different! Thanks for visiting though!
Good luck with your challenge this year.
