It’s Monday night ladies! That means it’s time for the weekly cloth diaper chat on Twitter! If you have questions about cloth diapers these Monday night Twitter chats are the place to go to find answers. Just be sure to use the hashtag (#clothdiapers) to follow the chats.
What do we talk about most during our weekly chats? WASHING! That’s right, the age old questions of “How do you wash your cloth diapers?” and “What detergent do you use?” I’ve use a few different detergents on my cloth diapers and I have my favorites. What if I told you that one option is to not use a detergent?
Did you just look at your computer like it was from Mars? Did The Eco Chic just say that you can wash cloth diapers without a detergent? Stinky, smelly, nasty, stained cloth diapers? What if I told you I washed them with dried fruit shells? Now you’re really thinking that I’m NUTS aren’t you?
Well I’ve began using EcoNuts to wash my cloth diapers and I love them! EcoNuts is the dried fruit shell from the Sapindus mukorossi tree, found in Nepal, India and Indonesia. These shells have been used for centuries in India and China and are just starting to become popular in America. EcoNuts contain a natural cleaner, called saponin, that acts as a surfactant. It’s incredibly effective for cleaning laundry (as well as other things) and is great for cloth diapers. EcoNuts are great for people with sensitive skin, eczema and severe allergies because it doesn’t leave any residue on the clothing. This is why EcoNuts are so wonderful for baby clothing and cloth diapers. Because it doesn’t leave any residue you can actually turn off your washing machine after the wash cycle and save gallons of water (and $$) by NOT rinsing!
In the picture you can see what the EcoNuts look like. This is the actual trial size box that I received to review. There are anywhere from 5-7 EcoNuts in each trial sized box, along with a reusable cloth bag. For washing cloth diapers they recommend using just a few EcoNuts (2-3 per load). Place the EcoNuts into the washing machine and add your diapers. Run your normal cloth diaper routine (for me I do one cold wash, followed by one hot wash) without the extra rinse cycles. That’s it, you’re done! The best part is that EcoNuts are reusable, you can use them several times (until they become mushy and gray) before you add them to your compost pile. There is no waste! The packaging is made of recycled cardboard that can easily be recycled again. I even received my package from EcoNuts in an eco-mailer!
