Summer Eco-Friendly Kids Swap

Friday, May 29th, 2009

I originally wanted to hold this swap for Earth Day but I think summer will be best! My oldest will be out of school starting June 1st and this will be a wonderful activity to keep him busy!

I invite you to join The Eco Chic and other families across the United States as we celebrate this wonderful planet that we live on. The Eco Chic is hosting a eco-friendly summer swap for kids (and their families) ages 0-10…no we’re not swapping the kids…hehe…read on!

The goal of this swap is to 1) meet other eco-minded families in a different state, 2) send an eco-friendly care package to one family, 3) find creative ways to REDUCE, REUSE, and RECYCLE, and 4) share creative ways to educate our children about how to take care of the planet Earth. Ideally the care packages would be made up of items that are found (from nature), handmade, reused, recycled, or upcycled. Your care package might include a short lesson related to the environment. You can be as creative as you like. If you choose to purchase items (eco-books for example) we encourage you to purchase gently used items. Please keep your total investment under $10 plus shipping.

We will accept a total of 50 families for this swap. Families of all sizes are welcome to participate. We will make our best efforts to partner you with a family of similar size and age. This swap is best for families with children from ages 0-10.

Your commitment once the swap has begun:
1. Post information about your family and how you care for the Earth everyday.
2. Email your swap partner and introduce your family and share any special considerations (vegetarian, BPA free, no plastic toys, etc) that you would like your partner to know about you and your family.
3. Ship one small package to your swap partner by July 15, 2009.
4. Acknowledge receipt of your package with either an email or Thank You card/letter.
If you choose to do more that is great but this is the minimum requirements for this swap.

To join in please send an email to theecochic@gmail.com. Please include your name, name and age of your children, their ages and genders, your location, and any special considerations that may be used to help partner you with the perfect family. Also please include how you heard about this swap. The deadline to sign up is June 22, 2009 at midnight (EST) unless we receive our goal of 50 participants prior to that date.

In order to keep our environmental footprint small I will try to partner you with a family in a nearby State if possible. At this time this swap is only open for residents in the United States for this same reason.

Please feel free to post this information on your blog to help spread the news of the swap. We look forward to meeting you all as we share our love for Mother Earth with you and your families. Email me with any questions.

You Can Getaway to the Bar too

Soapy Nature Getaways

Soapy Nature Getaways

Sorry!  My links aren’t working properly and I’m not that techie to be able to figure it out!  Please visit www.soapynature.com to learn more about the products mentioned in this post!

I mentioned the other day that I was going to the bar…the bar of soap that is!

Before we begin I want you to do something, get up and go to your bathroom and tell me what’s in your shower.  For me I have 1 bottle of body wash, 2 bottles of shampoo (both hubby and I have our own), 1 bottle of conditioner, and 1 can of shaving cream.  There is barely room for all this stuff.  What happens to all those bottles when they are empty?  Hopefully you send them to the recycle bin but most people don’t have a recycle bin in their bathrooms so they can easily end up in the trash.

Now imagine your life without all those bottles and cans!  Sounds nice doesn’t it?  When was the last time you used bar soap?  Did you know that there is bar soap out there that doesn’t leave that nasty dry feeling to your skin?  Did you know that you can wash your hair with some bar soaps?  Did you know that you can shave with them too?  Hmmm…see where I’m going?  Why not replace all those bottles and cans (or at least a few of them) with one bar of soap!!!

I did just that about a week ago and I have to admit I was hesitant…I don’t like bar soaps much.  My new friend Jen from Soapy Nature has made me rethink the bar and so far I’m loving it!  Here is an interview with Jen about her homemade soaps…I mean getaways!

When did you start making Soapy Nature Getaways?
I started making soap about a year ago.  I had been buying natural soaps for a while due to my daughter having very dry skin and my newly acquired allergy to fragrances in commercial lotions and soaps.  With the natural soaps that I was buying I missed the fun fragrances and pretty packaging of the body washes we had previously used.  So, I began to learn how to make them myself and made bars that were more fun to look at and enjoyable to smell.   These bars actually get my kids excited about choosing one to use in the shower.

What is the difference between your getaways and other bar soaps you can buy at the store?  There are a lot of differences, actually.  The biggest thing is that bar soap at the store isn’t really soap.  It’s detergent.  If you look on the package of your favorite “soap”, it probably doesn’t even say “soap”.  It says “beauty bar” or something like that.  Some people say, “My doctor recommended Dove or Ivory for my sensitive skin”.  Even these bars are not as gentle as natural soap. Their ingredient list looks something like this:   sodium cocoyl isethionate, stearic acid, sodium tallowate, sodium isethionate, coconut acid, sodium stearate, sodium dodecylbenzonesulfonate, sodium cocoate or sodium palm kernalate, trisodium etidronate, BHT etc.  These detergents strip your skin of natural oils and cause skin irritations.   Even bars that claim to have natural ingredients or glycerin soaps aren’t the same as cold process, handmade soaps.   They may have a few added natural materials, but a very small percentage and it’s still hidden in there with the detergents.

My soaps have an ingredient list that reads like this: Olive Oil; Coconut Oil; Shea Butter; Distilled Water; Sodium Hydroxide; Essential Peppermint Oil; Peppermint tea leaves; and Spirulina.

And

Palm Oil; Distilled Water; Avocado Butter; Shea Butter; Coconut Oil; Sodium Hydroxide; Cocoa Butter; Essential Oils of Lime, Lemon and Sweet Orange; Annatto and Alfalfa.

All of my bars, with exception of the “Getaway-of-the-Month”, contain essential oils.  These oils are naturally derived from plants.  They have skin nourishing properties and/or aromatherapy properties.  This is much different than the commercial bars, which are scented with a synthetic fragrance.   Many people who have allergic reactions to commercial “soaps” are having a reaction to the toxic fragrance chemicals and perfumes in the bar.

As I mentioned earlier, I have an allergy to fragrances, but have never had a problem with any of my bars, even though they each have a pretty strong aroma.

Another biggie that you want to avoid is “antibacterial soaps”.  These bars contain chemicals such as methylisothiazolinone, Triclosan and Tricolban.  Each of these chemicals have been linked to harmful effects on our bodies and the environment.  Antibacterial soaps kill some bad bacteria, but they are also killing good bacteria.

Where do you get your inspiration for your getaways?   I think we all need a little bit of “me” time to recharge and take a break from normal stresses.   Enjoying a nice warm shower with a great smelling aroma and wonderfully feeling bar of soap can do a lot for your psyche.  I attempt to incorporate the look and scent to help motivate, recharge or relax you.  Like in Hammock Dreams, it’s made with Clary Sage and Lavender oils, both of which are known for their sedative properties.  Then I chose a color palate that I felt was relaxing.  With Spicy Sunrise, you have the opposite.  It’s made in a nice bright and energizing orange color with essential oils of clove and orange to stimulate your mind.   In bars like Runner’s High I’ve chosen colors that remind me of the activity.  It’s designed to look like the sky with a line of clouds above a running path.  When I go for a run, I spend a lot of time looking up into the sky.  The fragrance is Eucalyptus, peppermint and basil essential oils.  eucalyptus is known for it’s sinus and mind clearing properties.  It is even beneficial to sore muscles.  The peppermint is very cool and refreshing and the hint of basil just gives a little herbal(outdoorsy) bite to it.

What do you use as dye for your getaways?  Most of the Getaways are made with herbs.  I use Calendula for yellow and orange colors.  Alkanet Root for blues and purples.  Annatto seed for deeper orange.  Cocoa powder for brown.  Alfalfa for green.  Spirulina for deeper green.  Green clay in the Spa Day bar.  Paprika for the beige in Barefoot Summer.  Red clay for red.  An ultramarine for blue and black.

How long does it take to make a batch of soaps?  Each batch makes about nine bars.  The single layer bars only take about thirty minutes.  The layered bars, like Spring Picnic and Sunny Citrus, take about three and a half hours.    The ingredients are mixed together and poured into a wooden mold.   It stays in the mold for approximately 24 hours during a process called “saponification”.  This is when all of the butters, oils and sodium hydroxide actually become soap.  I remove the loaf from the mold after 24 hours and allow it to sit for a few days to allow some of the moisture to evaporate and then cut the bars.  They are ready to use right away, with a proper ph.  I normally, however, let them cure for about two weeks before selling them, in order for them to harden up a bit more and last longer.

If you have really dry skin what are some ingredients that you use that will help?  My favorite is shea butter.  I love shea butter.  It is extremely nourishing to your skin and hair with Vitamins A, E and F.    Olive oil is high in vitamin E and antioxidants.  The Olive Oil Getaways are perfect for the most sensitive skin.  They are very gentle and have a lighter lather.  Avocado butter, avocado oil contain A, C, D, and E; proteins; beta-carotene; lecithin; fatty acids; and potassium.  Cocoa Butter is also loaded with antioxidants and essential fatty acids to restore irritated and dry skin.

What is your favorite getaway?   When picking my favorite scents, I love the scents with lime.  That would be the Caribbean Island, Sunny Citrus and Bike Path.  I even love Key West Weekend and I normally don’t enjoy patchouli very much.   I keep a small bar of the Bike Path in my car for air freshener.   My second favorite is Runner’s High.   When it comes to the look of the bars, my favorites are Night at the Movies and Wet and Wild.  The bar I use the most is Spa Day.  It’s the bar I use on my face and it does great with absorbing oil.

Explain how using your getaways is better for the environment (and for ourselves) than liquid body wash?  Well, just like the difference between commercial “soaps” vs. Soapy Nature Getaways, the body washes aren’t soap.  If you read the label, you notice that it is loaded with chemicals, most of which will strip your skin of important oils.  There are some companies who realize the benefits of natural butters and oils and they will say, “with shea butter”  or “now with cocoa butter”.  But, if you take a look at the ingredients label you notice it is a very small amount added to the shower gel/body wash.  These washes are also loaded with synthetic fragrances.  They are also high in sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES).  These chemicals are not only dangerous and irritating to your skin, but they are also absorbed by the skin and have been linked in some studies to liver toxicity, PMS, menopausal symptoms, and breast cancer. Both SLES and SLS are chemicals that are used in things like engine cleaner.   There are even handmade “soap” companies that are sneaking SLS and SLES into their soaps.   It’s important to read the ingredients labels.

The environment also benefits because we have less packaging per bar.   We are using things that came from the environment, there’s no chemical waste.   It is bad for us when using these chemicals and then it becomes bad for the environment when they are being washed down our drains.  You also decrease your plastics use a great deal, when you are able to use one bar to wash your entire body.

Approximately how many washes can you get from each getaway?  That really varies depending on how much a person uses each wash and how they care for the bar.  If you let the bar dry out between uses it will last longer.  The Three-Butter Getaways last the longest.  Most of my customers get a little more than a month’s worth of use from one bar.

Do you have any specials?    Each month we have a “Getaway-of-the-Month”.  We attempt to make it fun and seasonal.  May’s “Getaway-of-the-Month” was a huge hit.  Our Getaway for the month of June will probably be loved by everyone as well.  It’s called Fruit Smoothie.  The smell is absolutely delicious. These bars are always $3.99, a bit of a savings from the regular price bars.  We also offer monthly subscriptions for three, six and twelve months.  With these subscriptions we send out two of the monthly getaways for each month of the subscription, by the 15th of the month.   The subscriptions are fun because you get something special each month.  With the six and twelve month subscriptions you also save money, as it’s free shipping and only $3.54 a bar with the twelve month subscription.  It makes a really great gift.

All of the Getaways make fantastic gifts for anyone on your list, even men  (I even made my hubby try the getaways.  He was surprised that they lathered so well).  They are attractive, smell great and let’s face it everyone takes showers and who doesn’t want to be healthy?  We also offer custom labeling where we will print labels with your own message or quote to give your gift a personal touch.

Well, thank you so much Jen for the lesson on soap.  I never realized how many ingredients went into our everday ‘soaps’ and body washes.  I cant wait for my next Getaway!

I challenge you all to just try one bar of Soapy Nature and kick the bottle habit.  I guarantee you will be surprised!

Meet Kokopelli

Thursday, May 21st, 2009

While celebrating Earth Day at Honeymoon Island last month I had the pleasure of meeting a wonderfully talented children’s author.  Michael Sterns is a local author of a set of children’s books, Kokopelli & The Butterfly and Kokopelli & The Island of Change.  Michael is a self-published author and is very passionate about his stories.  His passion is what made me want to read these stories.

Kokopelli & The Butterfly by Michael Sterns

Kokopelli & The Butterfly by Michael Sterns

There are many messages in both stories including conflict management, acceptance, diversity, and care for the environment.  Kokopelli is a great role model and can teach children (and adults) many wonderful life lessons.

Michael spent a great deal of time in the layout of the books so that families could enjoy these stories together.  Each book is large enough so that as you read the story you wrap yourselves around your children; whether you have one or more kids cuddled up on your lap.  He made a special point to alternate the illustrations on the pages so children can share the reading experience.  His books make family time a special time for everyone.

The stories are rather lengthy but as I read them to Big B he didn’t want me to put it down.  We normally spend 15-30 minutes each night reading before bed and even as we came closer and closer to bedtime he wanted to know what happened next.  We ended up turning the lights out a little late that night, but it was time well spent.

Another wonderful feature of these stories is that they are good for children of all ages.  The youngest members of your families will enjoy the illustrations and vibrant colors.  As your children get older they will enjoy listening to the flow of the stories, almost as if it were being sung to them as the words flow so nicely.  The older children in your family will enjoy being able to read the story with you.  Even as an adult I enjoyed reading the stories to Big B and seeing the excitement and joy on his face.

If you would like to get your own copy of Michael’s books you can go to Grasshopper Dream Productions.  Be sure to use the following referral code at checkout: 1570.

A Greener Way to Get Clean – SOAP!

Monday, May 18th, 2009

By TwitterButtons.com

I recently became addicted to Twitter and have been meeting some wonderful people.  One of those people is Jen from Soapy Nature.  I’ve always loved the look and smell of handmade soaps but when I found out that Soapy Nature soaps are made locally (New Port Richey) I had to find out more.  Join me later in the week as I interview Jen from Soapy Nature about her products and why they are good for the environment.
ECO Store USA Vanilla Soap

ECO Store USA Vanilla Soap

After my recent posts about parabens and other nasty chemicals in our beauty products I decided to try bar soap instead of that wonderfully addictive bath gel we’ve all become addicted to.  I have one bar from ECO Store USA that I’m trying right now.  So far I have no complaints.  It has a nice mild vanilla scent.  It doesn’t leave my skin all dry and flaky.

Eco-Friendly Bar Soap

Soapy Nature Getaways

Now I have even more soap to try, these are from Soapy Nature.  These all natural getaways (bar soaps) are available in a variety of scents for all skin types.  There is even a soap that works as a shampoo.  I can’t wait to try them all.

Follow me on my journey to ditch the bottle…the body wash bottle!  I’m also going to be trying these soaps for shaving instead of traditional shaving cream.  I can potentially replace my shampoo, body wash, and shaving cream with one bar of soap and have virtually zero waste.  Now to see how well they work!

Ebeanstalk Baby & Children’s Toys

Monday, May 18th, 2009

Ebeanstalk is dedicated to a baby’s development. And they select the best baby toys matched to a baby’s development. To see great information on how a baby grows up, check out the info on their baby toys page.

Picking toys for a baby is not as simple as it sounds. Here are some quick baby facts:

  • Toys for a newborn baby: A newborn baby is briefly looking at objects and attempting to imitate facial expressions. They can follow objects with their eyes and usually quiet down, when they are picked up.
  • Toys for a three month old: They will enjoy ‘frolic play’, reaching for objects and will repeat enjoyable activities. Believe it or not, they will respond to ‘no’ (about half the time) and will start babbling.
  • Toys for a six month old: They’ll search for hidden objects (object permanence). They’ll reach for themselves in the mirror, play peekaboo, crumple paper, roll from their stomach to their back and even respond to their name.
  • Toys for a nine month old: They are pushing toy cars, playing pat-a-cake and looking for hidden sounds. The baby toys they are playing with are also getting more fun.

Ebeanstalk offers a small collection of organic and wooden toys for babies.  For all my readers, here is a 15% discount on any first purchase at ebeanstalk — TGS345 — just enter the code at the shopping cart.

Random Green (and not so green) Thoughts

Thursday, May 14th, 2009

I was talking (ok…emailing) a friend of mine today and it reminded me about some questions I’ve been struggling with lately.  Can switching to green actually have a negative impact on the environment?

Take for instance babies.  I now have a 4 mo old baby (Lil’ B) who is getting many of my son’s baby gear.  He’s 6 yr old and I wasn’t quite as green as I am now.  Some of the items I’ve saved aren’t exactly eco-friendly.  So here is a list of the items that if I were to buy them today I would make a different choice than I did 6 yrs ago.

  1. Crib mattress.  I would buy an organic cotton mattress if I bought a new one today.
  2. Baby bottles.  I would buy BPA-free bottles and storage jars for my breast pump.
  3. High Chair.  I would buy a nice wooden high chair today instead of the plastic bulky one I have.

And what about the baby gifts you receive.  What if you receive items that aren’t eco-friendly?  Like baby soap, lotion, disposable diapers & wipes, and  plastic toys.

So here is my question (ok many questions).  Do you buy new or reuse what you already have?  Do you keep what you are given or exchange/giveaway gifts that aren’t eco-friendly?  At what point is buying new more damaging than keeping what you already have?  As long as the product I saved hasn’t been recalled due to some safety issue, what is the harm in keeping it?  And if I did feel strongly about the new issue (like paraben free soaps and lotions) what do you do with the item you are replacing?  It’s obviously still usable but not up to your standards.  So do you donate it or dispose of it?  If you donate it aren’t you then putting someone else into danger that your feel strongly about?  If you purchase a new product aren’t you then doubling the impact of producing that item?  And if you used that product on your first child and they are still ‘fine’ than what’s the harm of using it again?  But if you don’t replace it are you knowingly putting your next child in danger?

As if moms don’t have enough mommy guilt to deal with!  Me personally, I’m still using the majority of the items I used with my son.  It’s only as I purchase new items that I am replacing them with the newer, more eco-friendly products.  What about you?

A Greener Little League??

Monday, May 11th, 2009

This past Saturday was the closing day for Big B’s Little League.  We don’t usually spend much time at the park and rarely visit the concession stand but this weekend was different.  Halfway through the game Big B looked at the dugout coach and said “Look at all these bottles in the trash, why aren’t they being recycled?”  Gotta love a 6 yr old who is more interested in recycling than the game.

Spending a whole day at the ball park I was in shock with the over flowing garbage cans of plastic bottles!  By noon all the trash cans were full and most of the content was bottles.  They obviously don’t have a recycling program in place.  We’re lucky though, this year we at least have trash cans in the dugouts.

Well since Little League is a volunteer organization I guess I’ve volunteered myself to a new pet project…setting up a recycling program for the league.  I can see so much potential.  I may even link the recycling program with a fundraiser.  Many teams bring drinks for the kids following the game and Capri Sun is a common choice.  Wouldn’t it be neat to take those juice packs and join a TerraCyclebrigade to earn money for the park?  Hmmmm…the juice is flowing!

Stay tuned as I try to green out little league before next springs season begins.  Anyone have any tips?

Does Green Smell?

Thursday, May 7th, 2009

Yes, The Eco Chic is still alive!  After Earth Day and another eco-event I was involved in I decided to take some time off and rejuvenate myself!  But never fear…The Eco Chic is here!  (No, I’m not a Super Hero!)

I was talking with a vendor this afternoon about green cleaners and a question was raised.  Do green cleaners need to smell?  Do they need to have a lemony scent (or any scent) for us to think they are cleaning?  After years of using traditional cleaners that have strong scents (good or bad) is it hard for consumers to trust green cleaners if they don’t have a scent?

I’ve used several different green products.  Laundry detergents, all purpose cleaners, dish soaps, bath soaps, and more.  I have to admit the ones I tend to like the most have some kind of scent to them.  A recent laundry detergent I tried had eucalyptus oil added as a fragrance and I loved it.  Why?  Do our senses help us make our product selections?

What do you think?  Do your products have to smell?  Do they work even if they don’t smell?
